Kristoffer Ragnstam has spent years shaping music from multiple angles, guided more by the curiosity of an artist rather than by convention. That restless creative spirit fuels They Owe Us, and finds a compelling outlet in “Frank,” the latest single from the Swedish alternative rock project. Serving as a preview of the forthcoming album Katzengold, the track unfolds like a late-night haze: cinematic, intimate, and difficult to fully grasp, especially on a first listen!

Rather than offering a clear-cut narrative, “Frank” draws listeners into a world where composure feels fragile and certainty remains just out of reach, just like life itself. Beneath its polished exterior lies an undercurrent of tension, as moments of control brush against the possibility of collapse. The song thrives in that liminal space, allowing ambiguity to become part of its very own appeal.

Photo: K Ragnstam

The track blends alternative rock with subtle pop and classic rock influences. Layered keyboards add depth and texture, while expressive guitar lines cut through the arrangement with emotional precision. The instrumentation is constantly shifting, mirroring the song’s themes of instability and transformation without necessarily losing its sense of direction.

“Frank” does not rush to explain itself or tie together its loose ends. Instead, it embraces contradiction, vulnerability, and uncertainty; inviting listeners to find their own meaning within its shadows. With this release, They Owe Us delivers an immersive and thought-provoking listen. One that cleverly builds anticipation for what Katzengold has yet to reveal!

Levi Morrison‘s debut album, To Find The Source, warmly welcomes listeners with his latest release “Tell Me It’s Not Your Fault.” This is a release where his voice emerges with a gentle and confident warmth. This self-produced, deeply personal song weaves together catchy melodies with rich, textured soundscapes, creating a sonic experience that feels like an intimate chat beneath endless, open skies. Influenced by indie rock, dream pop, shoegaze, and alt-rock, Morrison crafts an atmosphere that is both grand as well as personal, quite a tricky combination to master.

The song wraps listeners in shimmering guitars and intricate production, but at its heart lies a melody that easily resonates with the listener. The repeated plea, “tell me it’s not your fault,” almost feels like a confession; and instead of dictating a single interpretation, Morrison invites listeners to breathe their own stories and emotions into this line.

The way in which the song came to be, should indeed be highlighted: Morrison has shared that he doesn’t fully remember writing it, only realizing its meaning later. This sense of discovery flows through the music, giving the track a power and rawness that feels genuinely authentic. “Tell Me It’s Not Your Fault” stands out as both atmospheric and relatable, serving as an emotional centerpiece on To Find The Source and offering a tender glimpse into the promising path of Morrison’s future musical journey.

Eighteen months in the studio is a long time, but Leather Laces put that time to good use. On Intercontinental Ballistic Music, the anonymous Italian industrial metal outfit emerges with a record that feels carefully constructed without losing its raw impact. Hidden behind riot gear and rooted in the mythology of the Devisal universe, the band leans fully into its dystopian vision, delivering an album that explores control, conflict, and the uneasy relationship between humanity and technology.

The opening track, “Extruder-Destroyer,” wastes no time getting started. Mechanical rhythms, aggressive synths, and grinding guitars arrive in full force, setting the tone for what follows. The album rarely lets up from there. “Mind Control Techniques” taps into themes of manipulation and surveillance, while “Deployed to Hell” pushes the militaristic atmosphere even further, sounding like the soundtrack to a battle fought somewhere between the physical and digital worlds.

Instead of presenting a collection of unrelated heavy tracks, Leather Laces build a consistent environment from beginning to end. The recurring imagery of resistance, obedience, and technological domination gives the record a clear identity, while the blend of electronics and metal keeps the sound dynamic throughout.

The production deserves credit as well. The layers of synthesizers and guitars feel deliberate rather than excessive, creating a dense wall of sound that remains surprisingly easy to follow. Even during its most intense moments, the album never feels cluttered.

“Unit Goes Home” immediately shifts the mood. There is still darkness here, but also a sense of aftermath, as if the dust has finally settled after the conflict. It is a fitting ending to a record that spends much of its runtime examining what happens when the line between man and machine begins to disappear.

With Intercontinental Ballistic Music, Leather Laces skillfully create a world, invite listeners into it, and commit to the vision from start to finish. The result is an industrial metal release that feels focused, immersive, and unapologetically intense!

Grunge may have emerged from the 1990s, but YACOVELLI has little interest in preserving it behind glass. With “Since Emilia,” the New York-based band draws from the genre’s familiar grit and intensity while pushing it into territory that feels fresh, dynamic, and unmistakably their own.

The song begins in an unexpected place. A Baglama, a traditional Greek string instrument, introduces a brief melodic passage that feels almost fragile before the guitars arrive and shift the mood entirely. What follows is a compelling mix of grunge, alternative rock, punk spirit, and psychedelic color, all stitched together by a riff that lingers long after the song ends.

The guitars are heavy and unapologetically rough around the edges, yet melody remains at the forefront. Moments of density give way to more spacious passages, creating a natural ebb and flow rather than a constant assault of sound. The result feels lived-in rather than manufactured, as though the song has been evolving for years before finally finding its final form.

Then there are the lyrics. “Since Emilia” doesn’t hand listeners a clear narrative; instead, it circles around its subject, offering fragments and suggestions. That sense of mystery becomes part of the appeal. The title character remains elusive, and the song is stronger for it, encouraging listeners to bring their own interpretations to the experience.

The band’s confidence and ability to follow its own instincts is remarkable. Drawing from grunge, stoner rock, and punk without becoming beholden to any one of them, YACOVELLI delivers a song that feels both familiar and forward-looking. With “Since Emilia,” the band proves that rock music can still surprise when it’s willing to take a few unexpected turns!

Brian Hunsaker’s “Lie To You” has a story almost as compelling as the song itself. Tracked mostly in a car during lunch breaks while Hunsaker was adjusting to life as a new father of twins, the single carries a quiet stubbornness that shows in every note. But those quirky recording circumstances aren’t what make the song, it stands on its own, pairing solid musicianship with a raw, human perspective.

The track opens with an urgent guitar arpeggio that sets the pace. From there it moves through shifting dynamics, layered harmonies, and a progressive-metal edge that keeps the listener on their toes. The arrangement rarely sits still; just as a section settles, a new rhythm, vocal layer, or atmospheric change pushes it in another direction.

The song deals with the breakdown of communication, the point where dodging the truth feels easier than facing it. The title nails that tension. Rather than casting dishonesty in black-and-white terms, Hunsaker focuses on the quiet damage left when hard conversations go unsaid, giving the heavier parts of the song a lingering emotional core.

Hunsaker’s vocals are indeed one of the record’s strengths. He moves from fragile melody to heavier delivery with ease, and the harmonies add real texture. In the second half the mood grows darker before a technically solid guitar solo arrives: it feels natural, not gratuitous.

Mixed and mastered by Matt Dougherty, Brian Hunsaker’s “Lie To You” sounds clean without losing bite. Each instrument has space, so the arrangement’s complexity comes through. More than just a heavy track, it’s a thoughtful, committed piece of work that balances both technique with feeling.

We don’t always get songs that capture life’s contradictions as gracefully as “Patio Door” does.
The release was written during a time of slow unraveling of a relationship, yet was released at the start of a new artistic journey. Existing between two opposing life forces, namely heartbreak and hope, certainty and doubt, endings and beginnings. The artist provides quite a thoughtful indie-folk ballad. One that both finds and exposes beauty in the spaces where conflicting emotions are found.

The artist skilfully blends indie folk, Americana, indie pop, and soft rock influences. We then find “Patio Door” unfolding with an understated warmth, allowing its emotional essence to gently surface and shine. Originally conceived with only two guitar chords during a period of uncertainty, the song eventually evolved to be a richly textured release; one that is carefully crafted, however, without ever losing its beautiful intimate essence.

Silver’s songwriting thrives on vivid yet unpretentious imagery. The recurring image of the open patio door becomes both a physical setting as well as a metaphor for transition. Opening with “The patio door stays open all summer long / The breeze comes and goes as it pleases,” she immediately creates a sense of place while subtly introducing themes of impermanence and emotional drift. Throughout the song, everyday details become vessels for larger emotions, making the narrative feel genuinely authentic rather than overly sentimental.

We also find the emotional tension constantly deepening through lyrics such as “There’s so much to say, but there’s nothing left to do,” which reads as a poignant acknowledgment of a relationship that has reached its inevitable conclusion. Later, the direct address in “Daniel, won’t you look at me? / It’s harder than you said it’d be” adds another layer of vulnerability, it’s almost an act of denial, capturing the frustration and sadness of trying to hold onto something we know is already slipping away.

Being the first song Alana Silver ever wrote, as well as the first she has chosen to release as a solo artist, “Patio Door” carries a significance that extends beyond its narrative. It is a farewell to one chapter and the opening of another. Honest, heartfelt, and emotionally resonant, “Patio Door” introduces Alana Silver as an artist capable of transforming life’s uncertainties into something beautifully authentic and quietly illuminating..

Some places never fully leave us. Years go by, scenery shifts, and life steers us down new paths, yet certain sounds, images, and memories stay quietly stitched into who we are. For Rob Hill, that anchor is the shoreline. On Love & Salt Water, the singer-songwriter gathers decades of coastal moments into a warmly human set of songs where love, gratitude, and endurance roll together like waves meeting the sand.

Inspired by a life lived near water, from Long Island’s North Shore to Washington’s Hood Canal, Hill builds an album that feels intimate and welcoming. Drawing on Americana, yacht rock, country, folk, and soft-rock colors, Love & Salt Water unfolds with an easy charm that matches its seaside muse. The ocean here isn’t mere scenery; it becomes a recurring symbol of perspective, renewal, and connection.

The emotional core arrives with the title track, “Love and Salt Water.” It opens in the hush of childhood beach days and moves toward a meditation on the clamor and uncertainty of modern life. Still, Hill returns to a plain, comforting refrain: “all you need is love and salt water.” That line quietly shapes the record’s overall mood.

Elsewhere, “High Side of Low Tide” finds beauty in small, still moments, while the moody “London” captures the nervous thrill of new romance. Lighter textures surface in the reggae-tinged “Island Girl” and the tongue-in-cheek “Bar Hoping,” which offset the album’s reflective pieces. Stephanie Layton’s vocals on “Stars Are Shining” and “Something Useful” add warmth, and contributions from Hill’s daughters give the project a genuine family feel.

Under Brandon Bush’s production, the record favors straightforward storytelling over spectacle. The arrangements stay relaxed and unforced, letting Hill’s songs comfortably breathe.

Love & Salt Water is like a long, slow walk along the coast at dusk: comforting, thoughtful, and gently uplifting. Like the shoreline that inspired it, the album lingers through its honesty and its remarkably beautiful strong sense of place.

“I Drove All Night” has had a few lives already. Roy Orbison wrote it, Cyndi Lauper made it a hit in 1989, and Celine Dion gave it the full power ballad treatment in 2003. Each version pulled the song in a different direction while keeping the core intact – that feeling of desperate, sleepless motion toward someone you need to reach. Swedish duo Talk in Vain are the latest to take a crack at it, and their version leans heavier than any of the above. Magnus Hellman had the arrangement concept sitting in his head for a while before it came together, and the result is the lead track on an EP that also packages three of the band’s earlier singles. It drops on June 5th.

Jessica’s vocals are a perfect fit for this borderline symphonic rock sound – her soaring sound pierces through the rich wall of sound and is complemented by the string section melodies, which, in my opinion, add enough character to the accompaniment that would otherwise sound pretty generic. Even though the beat is driving and overall very rock-sounding, the softness at the core here is very present, and that is clearly the intention behind the song.

Hellman and Jessica recorded the vocals with no pitch correction – what you hear is her natural tone and control, and that choice pays off on a song that lives or dies by its emotional delivery. Talk in Vain have been building steadily since forming in 2023, and “Her Case” – their debut single and also included on this EP – remains the crowd favourite from their earlier material. A release party is planned for this summer in Vaxjo, Sweden. For a band still relatively early in their run, covering a song this well-trodden is a reasonable way to introduce your sound to a wider audience, and on that front, it does the job.

Thirteen years is a long time to be away. Jamie Block spent the late 1990s helping build New York’s anti-folk movement from the ground up, released a Capitol Records album produced by Glen Ballard, and then went quiet for over a decade. The comeback has been methodical – a four-part catalog reissue, a string of singles, and now “Love Crash”, his sixth album and first new material since 2013. SPIN called it the cosmic return of an essential voice. Rolling Stone called him a musical wonder who challenges the conventional. The press kit credentials are in order. What matters is whether the record earns them, and across ten tracks of heartbreak, dark humor, and hard-won survival, it largely does. Block describes each song as a rung of a ladder out of a very dark place. That framing is accurate without being self-pitying, which is exactly the tone the album sustains.

“Love Crash”‘s melodicism is second to none, and it’s an album that rewards active listening with detailed harmonic layers and lyrics that harbor more meaning than they let on. Produced by Chris Kuffner, whose credits include Ingrid Michaelson and Regina Spektor, the record sits comfortably in that lineage – folk-rooted, emotionally intelligent, arranged with enough detail to reveal itself gradually. Block‘s characteristic blend of vulnerability and humor keeps the heaviness from curdling into self-indulgence, and that balance is what makes the album hold up as a complete listening experience rather than a collection of moments.

“California Calls” is a standout built almost entirely on acoustic accompaniment, yet it feels somehow bigger than its instrumentation should allow. Analytically, the element most responsible for that is the space between the notes rather than the notes themselves – Block seems to be closely following that Miles Davis wisdom about silence being as important in music as sound. The notes played definitely still carry their weight, though, with harmonic choices that accentuate a homesick feeling for California in a way that’s specific enough to feel earned.

“Over And Over” opens a window for introspection in which, over and over, we revisit old memories as the song gradually builds up a sonic palette that is much more harmonically complex than the preceding songs on the album. It’s a very ethereal sound, and as it builds up, it pulls you in closer and closer, and its intimate sound infiltrates your mind as if the sounds are coming from inside.

“The Heartbreak Song” is legitimately hilarious. First of all, it’s pretty clearly intentionally parodying corporate advertisement music while Jamie Block lays down the punchlines, which are themselves obvious jabs at the empty promises that capitalism attempts to sell to us. But it’s not just that – there is more on offer here than surface-level commentary, and that is signaled with the dynamic changes of the music as more human elements begin to creep in. It’s a really fun song that rewards repeat listens.

Block is currently on a U.S. tour behind the record, and the momentum around this comeback – a million streams, Apple Music editorial placements, audiences across five continents – suggests the thirteen-year gap hasn’t cost him the audience so much as expanded it. “Love Crash” is the work of someone who went through something real and came out the other side with enough craft and perspective to make something lasting out of it.

The backstory here matters. Michael Vdelli caught Art of Dysfunction live in 2021, invited them to open his shows, took them on a European tour in 2022, and somewhere between the sound checks and jam sessions, the collaboration became something more permanent. The resulting band – Vdelli on guitar and vocals alongside Michael Menna, Kelly McCarthy, and Royce Mack – is a deliberate fusion of Vdelli’s decades of experience with the raw energy of one of Australia’s most exciting young blues-rock outfits. “You And The Blues”, out May 5th, is an early statement of intent from that union, and it lands with the confidence of a band that already knows what it is.

In an era where AI music is a vicious threat on the horizon and is actively polluting the waters of blues music and other standard genres, it’s refreshing to see great musicians with a genuine human voice tell their stories – and blues music in particular lives or dies by that authenticity. The blues has always been a genre where emotional truth is the whole point, and any artificiality in the performance or production collapses the entire premise. Vdelli and company understand this instinctively, and “You And The Blues” sounds like people who have actually burned through something, delivering testimony rather than performance.

The lyrics carry elemental imagery throughout – ocean, lighthouse, fire, kiln, furnace – mapping survival and transformation through physical metaphor. The line “I made myself taste so bad that nothing would dare eat me” is the kind of self-aware brutality that only comes from lived experience, and it lands accordingly. The arrangement gives all of it room to breathe: spacious, brooding, the rhythm section moving with a steady tidal pulse while the guitar leans into tone and sustain rather than flash. For a newly formed band, the chemistry here sounds anything but new.
