The textures here are genuinely ingenious, and they work perfectly with the ethereal feeling of being underwater as a metaphor for being lost and alone, and slowly coming to terms with the idea that it’s okay to take up space anyway. This is a heavy song, and the arrangement and sound design support that narrative throughout rather than just decorating it- the kind of production choices that make the metaphor land rather than just illustrate it on the surface. It fits the band’s stated sound well, built on the contrast between delicate, close-up quiet and walls of distorted guitar, where the loud moments only arrive once they’ve been earned.

Formed during the pandemic when Sasha and Stefan started writing together before Ryan and later Phil rounded out the lineup, Awake & Dreaming have built real momentum without a label behind them, including a sold-out support slot for Carole Pope at Toronto’s historic El Mocambo and a catalogue that’s already crossed a quarter million streams off the strength of 2024’s “Old Ghosts” alone. With “Inevitable” arriving on a limited signed vinyl pressing and an accompanying tour through Ontario and Quebec this fall, “Underwater” makes a strong case that the album is going to be worth the wait.

Mark Peters is clearly someone who understands melody intimately, and that shows in how simply this song is built, with the bass interacting with the melody in a genuinely tight, considered way. Rather than reaching for anything flashy, Peters focuses on the essence of the songwriting itself, and it pays off; this is the kind of song strong enough melodically and harmonically that it would hold up with almost any instrumentation behind it. The genre-blending choices here, intricate classical guitar layered against atmospheric electric textures over a hypnotic drum groove, only add to that foundation rather than distracting from it, and the 70s-inspired sound palette suits the song’s emotional weight well.

For a London-born artist of Irish and Indian heritage whose songwriting has always leaned on personal experience and everyday chaos, “Ton Of Bricks” feels like a genuine statement of values as much as a song, proof that craftsmanship and musicianship can still carry a track on their own without needing modern production tricks to fill in the gaps behind them.

That sense of hard-won conviction comes through clearly in the recording itself. This is a song that feels timeless, warm and inviting in tone, with a real sense of experience showing through in the dynamics of the performance, the kind of lived-in feel that’s hard to fake. Some of that comes down to how it was made: producer Eric Lilavois tracked Keating’s acoustic guitar and vocals live together at Seattle’s London Bridge Studios, the same room that captured records for Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Mother Love Bone, a choice that preserves the true phrasing and intention of a singer-songwriter performance rather than smoothing it out after the fact.

Drawing on influences that run from The Carter Family and Ramblin’ Jack Elliott through to Etta James and the Laurel Canyon storytelling tradition of the late 60s and early 70s, “Louder” fits comfortably into that lineage of Americana built on genuine personal experience rather than borrowed sentiment. Following a recent opening slot for Carl and Wes at Portland’s Kelly’s Olympian, this single makes a solid case for a band that’s clearly found its footing after years of Keating working through different musical partnerships to get here.

The four-track project finds Melbourne-based singer-songwriter Jason Mckee working somewhere between ’90s rock, alternative pop-rock and cinematic orchestration. But genre is perhaps less revealing here than the emotional world of the songs. Mckee draws primarily from lived experience, allowing difficult and deeply personal moments to become the raw material for songwriting.

“Akaroa” is where that sense of mystery first takes hold. The song originated in a vivid dream during an exceptionally difficult period, when Mckee encountered the word “Akaroa” despite having never heard of the New Zealand coastal town. The melody that followed was eventually lost, only to return years later when he unexpectedly found himself in Akaroa. He describes experiencing an inexplicable presence there before completing the song that same night.

That story inevitably colours the listening experience. “Akaroa” carries a reflective, almost dreamlike quality, its atmosphere leaving space for uncertainty and interpretation. Rather than feeling like a song simply about a place, it becomes a meditation on memory and the strange routes through which creativity sometimes returns to us.

“Erica And The Stars” moves in a different direction, transforming an intensely difficult period into something considerably more expansive. Written during a severe personal crisis, the song became a means of escape and eventually a source of hope. Its most striking element is the full Budapest Orchestra, performing an arrangement Mckee had first imagined internally.

Here, the EP’s intimate songwriting suddenly meets grandeur. The orchestration gives the track a cinematic scale, but the vulnerability behind it remains audible. There is something particularly moving about that transition; from an intensely internal experience to a fully realised ensemble performance.

The production, recorded at The Avenue Recording Studio in Cheltenham with orchestral sessions in Budapest, brings together an accomplished group of collaborators, including producer Simon Moro and musicians connected to Men at Work, Jet, Robbie Williams and The Voice Australia. Yet the musicianship never feels like the point in itself. It serves the emotional architecture of the songs.

Reetoxa’s Double A Side 2 (Akaroa / Erica And The Stars) is less about darkness than transformation. “Akaroa” looks toward memory; “Erica And The Stars” reaches beyond it. One searches the past for something that disappeared. The other looks upward, imagining somewhere else to go.

And somewhere between the two, Reetoxa finds a space where memory can become music, and survival can become something luminous..

They aren’t really setting out to reinvent the wheel here; they’re more about upholding the torch of a strain of alt rock that’s fallen a bit out of popularity, and they capture that sound and mood with genuine authenticity. One element worth highlighting specifically is the guitar hook that comes in right after the chorus; the tone on that is genuinely great, exactly the kind of detail that separates a band doing this style well from a band just going through the motions of it. It’s the sort of hook that sticks with you well after the song ends.

Pitched at fans of Breaking Benjamin, Shinedown, Three Days Grace, and Alter Bridge, that comparison holds up without CREEPS coming across as derivative of any one of them specifically.
