Based in Leicester, 9 O’Clock Nasty are a 3-piece alternative outfit who are far less serious than what first appears. Noisy, brash, and seemingly aggressive, 9 O’Clock Nasty are a bold bunch not scared of raising some hell, and they readily do with each of their explosive and charismatic pieces. Usually fun and nonchalant, with an obviously edgy character that effortlessly bubbles to the surface, giving their music a threatening color that could not be further removed from the blokes’ cheerful and goofy personalities. 

On ‘Playboy Driver’, one of the outfit’s most memorable cuts to date, the trio opens up with a pair of juicy riffs and an earth-shaking groove that soon gets amplified by metallic and addictive percussion hits. The vocals are -in pure 9 O’Clock Nasty fashion- rowdy, loud, dangerous, and mostly unkempt. A terrific blend of aggression, intensity, and the most lighthearted and laid-back personality, with distinct and very loud character.

‘Playboy Driver’ made me realize I missed new drops from the Leicester trio, and for that alone, it is an immediate winner in my book.

At last, the English post-punk legends, 9 o’clock Nasty, have revealed the release date for their latest album, This Is Crowland. Be sure to mark your calendar for Saturday, February 22nd, when the album drops. In the meantime, allow me to share more details about it below.

Based in the charismatic town of Leicester, 9 O’Clock Nasty are an outfit that specializes in music that is seemingly rowdy and brash, yet it is their signature to deal clearly deep philosophical messages in their hairy and hammer-fisted songs. ‘King Thing’ handles racial imbalance and toxic masculinity; about a feeling that you are more powerful and preferred than your peers, because of your white male privilege, yet it also handles the guilt and rage that lies behind toxic masculinity and white supremacy. 

‘King Thing’ deals with all of that through a sample of the immortal ‘When the Levee Breaks’ drum part, slightly sped-up, but instantly recognizable. It is worth noting that this iteration of ‘King Thing’ follows the same song that was released in 2023, re-recorded with all the new tricks the band have picked up along the way, which speaks of how important ‘King Thing’ has been for the group.

Again, surprising listeners with their profound depth that is often in stark contrast to their sonic haphazardness, 9 O’Clock Nasty continue to prove that they are a band of intelligence and with a unique musical persona that is not to be taken lightly.  A rebuild of 9 O’Clock Nasty’s most popular cut to date, the EQ Remix for ‘Too Cool’ is miles apart from the conventional, meaty rock of the original. An English 3-piece rock outfit, 9 O’Clock Nasty are originally based in the rowdy and characterful Leicester, and this reimagining of their most popular cut has been made by Mark Yorath, working with Phil Haywood and DJ Mastersafe, all three of them knowledgeable and handy with drum and bass and breakbeats, there is no surprise this remix turned out as tight as it did.

The scratching glitchiness, breakneck pace, and vocal processing are all hallmarks of that style of music, all indications for a remix done by capable hands. And indeed, this remix for ‘Too Cool’ is not only sonically fitting, it is also fun, engaging, and full to the brim with exciting ideas, all executed quite nicely, for a resulting track that is simply infectious.

The EQ remix for ‘Too Cool’ is something extraordinarily different from the real thing, yet it is equally gripping and entertaining. A terrifically well-made remix. 

A Leicester-based 3-piece garage rock outfit, 9 O’Clock Nasty always have a knack for putting together really tight and concentrated releases. ‘Bad Vegan’ is the latest addition to their catalog, and it is a song that makes an amazing representation for the outfit and for the whole genre. From its diminutive runtime to its breakneck pacing and its skeletal and defined arrangement, ‘Bad Vegan’ is a short journey through everything that makes garage rock endure the waves of time.

The quaternity of overdriven riffs, fuzzed-out bass, punk beats, and group vocals will probably never grow old. ‘Bad Vegan’ is composed of this very simplistic arrangement. The call-and-response style of the vocals plays exceedingly well on top of the song’s shapeshifting riffs. The bass, and its intense 2-note chugs that turn into a smooth descending rampage is super simple, yet super effective, and so are the power chord guitar riffs. ‘Bad Vegan’ does not intend to break any ground, just a fun and hasty piece of flowing garage rock.

A ton of fun, ‘Bad Vegan’ is a cheeky, one-and-a-half-minute foray into the minds of an adventurous, musical, and humorous trio who know very well how to spin a really tight song.

Musically, “The Wrong Guy” combines the darker tones of alternative music with the rebellious attitude of punk, therefore drawing on a broad spectrum of influences. Particularly in their mix of punk with aspects of other genres, the rough, almost sarcastic attitude of the song reminds one of early The Clash compositions. Especially in the grim undertones that dominate the song, there is also a subdued allusion to the post-punk sounds of Joy Division.

The instrumentation in “The Wrong Guy” is both minimalistic and effective, with driving bass lines and sharp guitar riffs that mark the track’s narrative. Naturally rough, the production reflects the lo-fi aesthetic favored by many punk and alternative acts. While the guitars and bass create a harsh, textured backdrop, the drums are powerful and provide the song with a constant backbone.

The song is performed vocally with an urgency and rebellious attitude. Perfectly portraying the frustration and uncertainty of being the wrong guy at the wrong place, the lead vocals are full of frustration. Fusing between alternative rock, pop with darker vibes made 9 O’clock Nasty grace the world with a unique musical vibe…methodical, slow, anthemic, pop, deep…these are some of the words that could describe but not give credit to the brilliance behind the making of “Hot Disco Shit”.

On the lyrical and storytelling side of things, “Hot Disco Shit” is a story about nights lost at the gates of heaven. Fun and laughter stopped by the doorman’s stern rebuke. A song about footwear being judged. About sex and death becoming too close for comfort…it’s an experience to say the least.

…and many times when artists try to tackle a deep, sensitive or even surreal topic…they go for a very generic direction, let me tell you this, not 9 O’clock Nasty, no sire…the British group managed to create a super catchy melodic and rhythmic environment where they shine brightly and uniquely.

Unlike other songs where the chorus is the most memorable section, “Hot Disco Shit” manages to be catchy across the board…the verses, the chorus, even the instrumental intro sucks you in and holds you tight.
