Initially, I want to showcase this talented group and its members: Michael Paynter (Icehouse), John (Watto) Watson (James Reyne), John McCall (previously with The Black Sorrows), Shane O’Mara and Randy Jacobs (previously with Paul Kelly), Jamie Muhoberac (John Mayer), and the Melbourne duo Susan Turner & Pasquale Monea. The diverse musical influences from Australia and the United States have contributed to unique qualities seldom found in contemporary acts.

The dynamic, powerful, and emotive singing style of Michael immediately captivated me within the first 30 seconds, drawing my full attention to the track. Everyone knows that the initial minute of a new song determines whether you will keep listening or not. I admired the tight musical arrangement and the fantastic chemistry among the band members, which is to be expected from such seasoned musicians. The exceptional mix highlighted the beauty of each instrument. Based in New York City, Shannen Bamford is a singer and songwriter whose spheres of pop and indie collide in land that’s more organic and grounded that indie’s customary cloudy and floaty nature. Bamford’s ‘Addicted’ is a song loaded with honey-toned guitars, a fantastic lyrical premise, and a superb production, all backing Bamford’s gentle but powerful delivery. Running for 5 minutes and with only 3 chords seems like a moot point, but for musicians, it is a challenging task to keep a song exciting for this runtime, and with just one harmonic figure that loops. 

Bamford handles the challenge with elegance, delivering a soulful vocal part, and a heaving instrumental that grows over time from a gentle, unaccompanied electric guitar arpeggio in the intro, to a manic and stormy solo backed by a driving rock ensemble to end the song. Bamford’s lyrics handle breakup from a different point of view that looks inward, and instead of pointing fingers and laying the blame on the other party, she focuses on how she could have handled things better, claiming that her euphoria-seeking character -addicted to the pain that fast thrills leave in their wake- is at least partly to blame.

An exceedingly mature piece of songwriting, both instrumentally and lyrically, Bamford is brandishing a fascinating ability to hook in listeners with confrontational lyrics and restrained arrangements that keep giving the longer they go. ‘Addicted’ is a beautiful song about heartbreak that introduced me to an artist that I’ll be waiting for every upcoming release of hers.

“Letter to My Future Lover” is an anthemic pop-rock song that has a lot of energy to give to the world…it’s the kind of song that needs a huge stage and a huge audience, because there is a lot…and I mean a lot of energy to go around.

Of course, the song is polished to the highest degree, which is not anything new to Live In Color…they’ve always maintained a very high level of musical production and quality that few bands could achieve.

“Letter to My Future Lover” manages to combine the catchy melodic hooks of pop with the unleashed power of rock…put them in one musical experience and take it to the absolute max…the vocal melodies are super catchy, accessible, and easy to instantly remember, without being too familiar still…

…while all of that is going on, the music has two moods in this song, either simple energy or epic energy…

The chorus explodes with colorful musical energy and we wait for the chorus to hit each time like a kid waiting for the ice cream truck to come to the neighborhood…it sounds and tastes so sweet.

Nashville-based three-piece band The Thing With Feathers have a certain melodic approach to writing power/indie rock that is in its glorious full swing on their latest studio release ‘Something Wrong’. Mashing together their colorful lineup of modern influences, the outfit borrows the deeply emotive melodic singing of Coldplay and mixes it together with The 1975’s affinity for bombastic beats and squeaky clean production on their latest single. Fueled by the gut-wrenching vocal delivery from frontman David Welcsh, taking the frontline with an unforgettable melody that is properly and soulfully belted while the machine gun-precise beats drive the song’s simplistic composition and ethereal, guitar-based mix forward through the song’s two-and-a-half minutes runtime, courtesy of Alex Hendricks and Chris Roussell, Welcsh’s bandmates.

Deliciously dynamic and wonderfully performed and just as wonderfully mixed, The Thing With Feathers’ latest release is an exquisite display of this Nashville-based trio’s range of talents. From a meticulous drumming rampage to a thick wall of creamy guitars to a heart-rending vocal delivery and ending with a solidly written tune with relatable lyrics and uber-memorable melodies all around, ‘Something Wrong’ sounds just right.

Monroe Moon kickstarted Navigator with a subtle heavy riff and deep pounding bass and drums, setting the mood for the big-sounding tune to come. It has an atmospheric smooth flow with fluid riffs and melodies that seamlessly carry the listeners throughout its touching sound, while the vocal melody beautifully is topping all that with Bunny Monroe‘s powerful yet warm delivery. The guitars and synth layering is very good, with each one taking its turn to shine and deliver the perfect emotion, while the insanely tight drums and bass lines keep the groove going and hold the song’s uniquely hooking flow together. 

Navigator is a solid tune by Monroe Moon that clearly demonstrates their amazing sense of melody and their well knowledge of their sound and how to deliver it. It has a smooth streaming structure with seamless dynamic shifts and a neat production that makes everything heard properly without compromising the mood or flow. A band that hails from Nashville, Tennessee, Cold Equation is a rock band that abandoned Nashville’s traditional sounds of roots and blues for a shade of dramatic, jangling indie rock that makes a noisy, melodic stance. 

Identity Crisis the latest product of Cold Equations and it is a song that features immensely neat and crisp-sounding production, in pure Nashville fashion. What’s even more in Nashville fashion is the immaculate sounding and plentiful guitars. All scratchy and overdriven to perfection in the song’s multitude of guitar layers. From the single note lines, to the strummed rhythm patterns, all the way to the meaty tone of the bass guitar. 

A song that’s purely guitar-based, the piece features the stunning vocals of lead songwriter Drew Kohl in a standout performance that’s full of panache and drama. Punk, but restrained and controlled, Identity Crisis revels in its sense of controlled chaos, a trick that Cold Equations seem to have gotten the hang of quite well. 

Featuring a crisp and manic guitar solo that gets interrupted halfway by another guitar solo is just a trip that I’m thankful for Cold Equations for putting me on. With its dramatic composition and wonderful-sounding production, the song’s terrific guitars are a pure pleasure to behold and the vibes are charged with endless adrenaline on Cold Equations’ latest offering.

Hailing from Pennsylvania, Mystik Fool is the brainchild of multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Galen Deery. Inspired by Eastern spirituality and idealistic philosophy Mystik Fool has a message to share with the world promoting mental and emotional wellness by “living through love”. He mixes influences from a variety of genres including rock, reggae, pop, folk and progressive to cook up what he calls “Spirit Jam”. While on the other hand, his live performances are an experience on its own that can’t be missed as he performs as a one-man band building all the songs from scratch through a looping station, showcasing his phenomenal musical talent while giving his audience an interesting and engaging performance that they will hardly forget.

“Gone with the Wind” is a dynamic and progressive journey that encourages growth, change, and leaving the past behind to embrace a better future filled with freedom and love. Mystik Fool’s dynamic voice seamlessly fits every part of the song, transitioning between warm and soft and energetic and high notes throughout the track.

With the help of producer and drummer Jeff Martin, Mystik Fool delivers a 5-and-a-half-minute blissful experience that never has a dull moment. Throughout the song, ambient synths and resonating guitars provide depth to the soundscape, while the drums in the second verse add a groovy laid-back layer, setting the mood for the second chorus.

The lines “We have come to lift you up, Will you walk away or come with me” trigger the second chorus where the song becomes more energetic forcing the listener to sing along the lines “I’m gone with the wind, I’m never coming back again, Watch me fly, fly away” that will keep resonating in the listener’s ears even after the song ends. Mystik Fool’s guitar solo is melodic bliss, sprinkled with bends that touch the soul ending with a catchy guitar lick that triggers an interlude. Where he adds layers of vocals that mimic the melodies creating an even more energetic atmosphere, before going into the outro chorus.

Overall, “Gone with the Wind” is a captivating and dynamic song from Mystik Fool, showcasing his musical prowess and promising a bright future for the artist. His distinct blend of genres and philosophies is sure to attract a diverse range of listeners, making it a worthy addition to any playlist. The soundscape of it is a nice collage between hard and soft musical rock transitions. It also has a sophisticated twist in the way it’s arranged. The song was inspired by the chaos and agony that was created by the pandemic. The overall sound of the song is upbeat, positive and encouraging. The musical arrangement is dynamic and is really thrilling to the ears. You’ve got a hard rock soundscape that is tinted with that pop positivity. You’ve got slow piano, xylophones sound effects, soft drums and cymbals, and melodic electric guitar. There are also fun electric guitars that are backing the song giving it so much texture. The vocals are highly emotive and are also very sexy undertones. The Hillties are going to make even more hype in the future with their really good music.   

The Vanities are an electronic rock duo from Cardiff, Wales. They are currently riding a wave of acclaim and praise after a decade-long, self-imposed period of isolation. Their latest single features commentary on Europe’s latest war-tinged era, but their approach is devoid of any trend riding, or cheap quotes, opting instead to feature simple, soulful lyrics, heartfelt and impactful, on a backdrop that’s as severe and as grand as the topic at hand. Private Army features a gut-wrenching string arrangement that’s content with staying in the backdrop most of the time, but when the time comes for the strings to soar, soar they do, displaying a sublime emotive strength that gives the lyrical and harmonic melancholy an entirely new depth that punches hard, among solid, commandeering beats that provide a solid, essential backbone. The vocals sound crisp, with sudden climbs that reminded me of the 80s sounds of Scorpions and Europe.

Private Army shows exactly why The Vanities have been successful, and after a decade-long silence, they returned to the same success. A band whose lyrics are concise and stirring, whose vocals are crisp and dominating, and whose musical choices are efficient and effective. The Vanities are a solid find, and their latest song, Private Army, is simply gorgeous.
