The great rock songs don’t just tell stories. They force you to confront something about yourself. That’s what Harry Kappen accomplishes with “Distant Shore,” a haunting, deeply compassionate single that reaches beyond politics and headlines to remind listeners what human desperation actually feels like.

At its core, “Distant Shore” is about refugees — people fleeing war, poverty, violence, and hopelessness in search of survival. That subject alone carries enough emotional gravity to sink most songwriters. Too often, songs about suffering become lectures or slogans. Kappen avoids that trap completely. He approaches the topic not as an activist with a megaphone, but as a songwriter with a conscience.

That distinction matters.

Kappen recently relocated from the Netherlands to Mexico, and the move clearly shaped the emotional framework of the song. But instead of centering himself, he acknowledges the privilege of choice. He contrasts his own voluntary journey with the impossible decisions faced by people who leave home because staying means death, starvation, or despair. That awareness gives “Distant Shore” its moral authority.

Musically, the track lives in a space somewhere between atmospheric rock, progressive pop, and classic singer-songwriter storytelling. There are traces of David Bowie throughout the production, particularly the ghostly influence of “Space Oddity.” The mellotron swells create an eerie sense of distance and isolation, as though the entire song is drifting through open water under a sky with no stars left.

But the Bowie influence isn’t imitation. It’s conversation.

Kappen takes those space-age textures and grounds them in something painfully real. Instead of an astronaut floating through the void, “Distant Shore” follows people trapped in trucks, crossing dangerous waters, carrying whatever fragments of their lives they can salvage.

“I kiss the door I can’t replace…”

That opening line is devastating because it’s so ordinary. No dramatic speech. No theatrical setup. Just a person saying goodbye to home, perhaps forever. Great rock and roll has always understood the power of detail. Bruce Springsteen knew it. John Lennon knew it. So does Harry Kappen.

The lyrics unfold like snapshots from a nightmare: overcrowded vehicles, endless nights, towering waves, prayers whispered in panic. And through it all runs the central question:

“Where is that distant shore?”

It’s the kind of chorus that lingers because it taps into something universal. Sure, it speaks directly to refugees searching for safety, but it also reflects a broader human hunger — the need for stability, peace, belonging, hope. Everyone is searching for some kind of distant shore.

What gives the song additional weight is Kappen’s performance. He never oversells the emotion. There’s no vocal grandstanding here, no desperate attempt to manufacture intensity. His voice carries weariness, compassion, and restraint. That restraint makes the song believable. He sounds like someone trying to understand suffering rather than exploit it for artistic credibility.

As a multi-instrumentalist, Kappen also deserves credit for the track’s careful construction. He wrote, played, and produced the entire thing himself, and the arrangement reflects a clear sense of purpose. Nothing feels excessive. The guitars shimmer quietly beneath the surface tension. The rhythm section moves like anxious breathing. Even the instrumental passages feel emotionally connected to the narrative rather than inserted for technical display.

And that’s ultimately why “Distant Shore” succeeds.

Rock music has always worked best when it connects personal emotion to larger social realities. Think about Marvin Gaye asking “What’s Going On?” or Springsteen writing about Vietnam veterans and working-class collapse. The point wasn’t politics alone — it was humanity. It was empathy.

“Distant Shore” belongs to that tradition.

At a time when much of popular music feels engineered for distraction, Harry Kappen delivers something that demands reflection. The song doesn’t offer easy answers. It doesn’t pretend music can solve global crises. What it does do is remind listeners that behind every statistic is a human being standing in the dark, praying they’ll survive long enough to see morning.

That’s what real songwriting sounds like.

And “Distant Shore” proves Harry Kappen understands it better than most.

–David Marshall

Swedish producer and songwriter Jari Salmikivi releases the single Firelight, a dynamic and emotionally charged country rock song about the hardest moment at the end of a relationship, the instant just before letting go, when the fire still burns close enough to feel.

Firelight is a mid-tempo song with a big, emotional hook and a cinematic quality that evokes open landscapes and long, empty roads. The production is warm and organic, rooted in classic country rock while carrying a modern sound that speaks to a wide audience.

“The song is about that limbo moment – when you know it’s over, but the feeling is still so real that you can’t quite walk away. It’s a universal experience most people will recognise.”— Jari Salmikivi

Jari Salmikivi is an established artist and songwriter with a background in blues rock and hard rock, and Firelight marks a natural evolution toward a more narrative-driven, country rock-inspired sound. The song is written and produced by Jari Salmikivi himself,
and has been externally mastered for the best possible audio quality.

From the very first lines, “Lost my way in the sea of sand / Holding tight to this broken land,” the song places you inside a moment that feels suspended, where leaving has begun but hasn’t fully happened yet.

You can almost see the empty roads, feel the stillness between destinations. The production leans into warmth and restraint, rooted in country rock yet softened with a modern clarity that allows every element to breathe. Nothing competes, everything listens.

What makes Firelight linger is how seamlessly the sound and story move together. The guitars carry a reflective weight, while the rhythm section remains steady, never intrusive. It’s a kind of emotional pacing that mirrors the narrative itself, forward motion without true escape. That feeling comes through most vividly in lines like, “Left the keys and the ring on the old pine floor / Couldn’t fake it, not one day more,” where the act of leaving feels both decisive and incomplete.

The chorus opens the emotional core even further: “Out here in the firelight, call me wild / Running from goodbye, like a child.” There’s something disarmingly honest in that admission, the contradiction of knowing it’s over while still resisting the weight of it. Even the smallest details, like “Her note still folded in the glovebox,” carry a quiet permanence, as if memory refuses to loosen its grip.

Jari Salmikivi leaves Firelight unresolved on purpose. It lingers in that flicker of feeling where letting go and holding on blur into one, an almost goodbye that never quite lands, yet continues to softly burn..

If you’re a passionate rock enthusiast like me, chances are you’ve heard of the alternative Seattle rock band Candlebox at least once. Their former lead guitarist Brian Quinn is behind the creation of the legendary rock track, “Until Fall.”

As a starting point, alternative music is not merely about fusing various styles or schools of thought. While I might perceive it this way when reflecting on legendary acts from two or three decades ago, today, it has evolved into a distinct genre with its own unique characteristics.

From here, allow me to elaborate further… I firmly believe that when we listen to seasoned artists, we quickly become enamoured with their captivating riffs and lyrics. The motivation behind their powerful vocals, combined with their distinctive guitar style, makes this rock tune truly unforgettable.

In my opinion, an accomplished musician like him, with a decade-long tenure as the lead guitarist for the multi-platinum rock band Candlebox, possesses the expertise to select the ideal session musicians for his record. This includes talented individuals such as drummer Ron DiSilvestro, bassist Mike Vlaanderen, and keyboardist Dustin Napoli.

Upon reviewing the press kit, I observed that the music was labeled as “dark country.” However, I also noticed significant rock and blues influences. In my view, there is a beautifully crafted hard rock solo that elevates the entire song to a whole new level.

“With this project, my goal is to forge a new sound built from all of my musical influences,” Quinn explains. “It’s heavier than the current polished version of country music, and the lyrical content leans darker. It’s about the journey — the setbacks, the distance travelled, and ultimately finding your way back home.”

In conclusion, amidst this surge of AI, I truly miss songs like “Until Fall.” They evoke a strong sense of nostalgia for the late ’80s and early ’90s. I eagerly anticipate exploring more releases from Quinn. Cheers to the revival of that legendary era!

Philadelphia, PA – After spending a decade as lead guitarist for the multi-platinum rock band Candlebox—recording five albums and touring internationally alongside artists including Bush, Three Doors Down, and Jerry Cantrell—Brian Quinn is returning to his creative roots with the March 13 release of his new solo single, “Until Fall.”

The track marks the beginning of a deeply personal musical chapter for Quinn, who describes the project’s sound as “dark country,” a heavier, more introspective blend of hard rock, blues, and country-rock.

“With this project, my goal is to forge a new sound built from all of my musical influences,” Quinn explains. “It’s heavier than the current polished version of country music, and the lyrical content leans darker. It’s about the journey — the setbacks, the distance traveled, and ultimately finding your way back home.”

Although “Until Fall” is being released now, the song’s origins trace back more than a decade. Quinn originally wrote the track in 2012 but felt it didn’t fit the musical direction of his bands at the time, including Octane and Fosterchild. On a whim, he posted an early acoustic version on YouTube, where a few unexpected listeners left thoughtful comments that stayed with him.

“There were only a handful of views, but those comments stuck with me,” Quinn says. “I always felt there was something different about the song — something familiar but unexplored.”

Now fully realized, “Until Fall” captures the emotional core of Quinn’s new musical direction. The song explores themes of isolation, perseverance, grief, and self-reflection while telling an underdog story about resilience and the relentless pursuit of purpose.

“It’s about taking a real look at yourself,” Quinn says. “Sometimes the mirror can be the loneliest place of all. But the point is to keep pushing forward. We’re all here for a reason.”

Rounding out Quinn’s vocals and guitar work is a seasoned lineup of musicians, including Drummer Ron DiSilvestro, Bassist Mike Vlaanderen, and Keyboardist Dustin Napoli. Drums, bass, and keys were recorded at the legendary Studio 4 in Conshohocken, PA, which is credited with artists such as Billy Joel, Anthrax, Bob Dylan, Lauren Hill, Dishwalla, The Police, and many more. Quinn recorded guitars and vocals at his home studio, “Headquarters,” and the track was co-produced by Quinn and award-winning producer DiSilvestro (The Dead Milkmen, The Smithereens), who also engineered the recording. It was mastered by Paul Edwin Hammond.

“Until Fall” is available on all major streaming platforms. To accompany the launch, a lyric video produced by Brian Bortnick, vocalist of Octane, premiered simultaneously on YouTube.

A feature-length music video co-produced and directed by James Callahan of Camp Rattler Video will follow shortly after.

The single also serves as the gateway to a larger collection of songs Quinn is currently writing and developing. The forthcoming project will chronicle his journey through life and music, blending personal reflection with the experiences that shaped his career.

“This isn’t just a new batch of songs,” Quinn says. “It’s a full-circle return to the music I’ve always been destined to make.”

With “Until Fall,” Quinn hopes listeners walk away with a renewed sense of perseverance—and a reminder that authentic, emotionally driven music continues to evolve.

“This kind of music isn’t dead,” he says. “It’s evolving. It’s a changing of the guard.”

From its opening seconds, George Collins Band make it clear they aren’t interested in hesitation. What Living Is For arrives already in stride, powered by a guitar line that feels purposeful rather than decorative. There’s no dramatic wind-up, no attempt to manufacture urgency; the song behaves like momentum itself, already underway.

What follows is a carefully paced build. The groove stays elastic, letting organ swells and horn accents slip in and out without crowding the frame. Instead of swelling into something oversized, the arrangement stays lean and responsive, guided by instinct rather than spectacle. Even when the guitar steps forward for a solo, it feels conversational, as if answering a question the song has been quietly asking all along.

Lyrically, Collins doesn’t circle doubt, he cuts through it. Lines like “Too long on the straight and narrow / Too much time avoiding strife” land with the clarity of someone who’s done weighing options. This is writing that favors action over analysis, lived experience over abstraction. When he sings “Gonna break some bones – suck the marrow out of life”, it’s not shock for shock’s sake; it’s a declaration of intent.

Musically, the track sits comfortably within Americana and heartland rock traditions, but it refuses to feel retrospective. There’s a brightness to the production, a sense of air and immediacy that keeps everything rooted in the present. Horns punch when needed, then vanish. The rhythm section keeps things rolling without insisting on itself. Nothing overstays.

What gives What Living Is For its staying power is the alignment between message and motion. The song doesn’t just talk about choosing life, it behaves like someone who already has. By the time Collins repeats “It’s my life”, it doesn’t sound defiant or defensive. It sounds settled.

As the track closes with “Gonna find out what living is for”, it feels less like a question than a commitment. With What Living Is For, the George Collins Band offer a reminder that forward movement doesn’t always require reinvention, sometimes it simply asks that you stop standing still!

Karey Lee Woolsey, a resilient singer-songwriter from Fort Myers, Florida, has transformed profound personal adversity into a compelling artistic narrative through his independent music career. Following an eleven-year federal prison sentence for a non-violent marijuana charge, during which his debut album A Million Miles Away achieved Billboard Heatseekers success, Woolsey has emerged as a symbol of perseverance and renewal. His latest album, REDEMPTION—released on January 2, 2026—fuses elements of rock, pop, Americana, and country rock into an emotionally charged exploration of survival, faith, and second chances, delivered with a charismatic vocal presence and unyielding optimism. In the ensuing dialogue, Woolsey discusses the evolution of his creative path, the thematic depth of this new work, and his aspirations for the future.

Your musical journey began under extraordinary constraints, with A Million Miles Away charting on Billboard while you were still incarcerated. How did those experiences shape your approach to songwriting and performance upon your release, particularly in developing a genre-blending style that incorporates rock, pop, and country influences?

Honestly, they do have guitars in prison. They barely make any noise, but it’s enough to write songs. That whole time taught me that the real instrument isn’t even the guitar… it’s your soul. That’s where my songwriting comes from.

“REDEMPTION” is described as a cinematic tale of survival and rebuilding, drawing from your personal story of overcoming imprisonment. In what ways did you channel specific life events into the album’s lyrical and musical framework to convey themes of grit and inspired renewal?

Prison wasn’t really hard in the way people think if you’re trying to do the right thing, but that first year… I didn’t know if I was gonna make it. Over time the walk got easier, and I turned that whole journey into music. That’s really what Redemption is.

⇒”REDEMPTION” can be purchased at Thekareylee.com

The album features tracks such as “Vibin With Me,” “Please God,” and “Big Mouth Bitch,” which appear to balance introspection with bold attitude. How did you select and sequence these songs to create a cohesive narrative arc that reflects radical perseverance?

The order of the songs wasn’t as important as the feeling of knowing when it was finished. The last song I wrote was “After All This Time,” and it ended up being the last track. It came from running into an old friend after years and realizing… life just moves fast. The people that never wrote back or reached out … it’s just life. People are busy. After talking to this person they actually said a line to me in that song and didn’t even realize it. That moment made me go, “Yep. This album is done.”

As a self-produced artist handling vocals, instrumentation, and production on “REDEMPTION,” what technical or creative challenges did you encounter in achieving the album’s raw, emotional sound, and how did they differ from your work on previous releases?

Drums… 100% drums. (laughs) I cannot play drums well at all, so some of it was electronic, and I also worked with a great drummer, Darrell Nutt. Coming home after being gone over a decade was crazy too. I left with a flip phone and came back to a different planet. Music tech changed so much, I felt like a dinosaur.

Your music has resonated on platforms like TikTok, where your resilience has built a dedicated following. How has this digital engagement influenced the promotional strategy and audience connection for “REDEMPTION,” and what role does social media play in amplifying your message of bravery and life celebration?

TikTok has been the best thing that ever happened for me connecting with fans. I had no clue how many amazing people were on there. I’ve gained almost 60k followers in like five months, and I honestly consider most of them friends. I try to answer everybody. Some days it’s 300–500 messages. It’s unreal seeing that many people put my songs on their playlists.

Tracks like “Self Control” and “After All This Time” evoke a sense of faith and family amid hardship. Could you elaborate on how these elements of personal philosophy informed the album’s overall tone, distinguishing it from broader trends in contemporary rock and pop?

I just want people to feel like it’s never too late. I hit the Billboard charts from inside prison as an independent artist… and I’m the first one to ever do that. I never gave up. Every minute is another chance to turn your life around. And let’s be honest… everybody loves a redemption story. NEVER GIVE UP. I know that’s sort of cliche, but man… it’s sooooo REAL.

Having transitioned from wrongful imprisonment to becoming a charting artist, what insights from your journey do you hope listeners take away from “REDEMPTION,” especially those facing their own obstacles?

Gratitude doesn’t even cover it. Eleven years without a real pillow or mattress… then you get out and simple things hit you hard. Ice in a cup. Food you’re not scared of. Feeling loved. Having sex!! Let’s be real…over a decade. YOU TRY IT!! Freedom is priceless, and most people don’t even stop to think about it. I write from a soul that’s finally free. I can talk about the past, but I’ll never relive it… songwriting is kind of like visiting it safely, knowing you made it out.

Looking forward, with “REDEMPTION” marking a significant milestone in your post-release career, what new musical directions or collaborations are you considering to further explore themes of purpose and second chances?

My influences are all over the place. I’ve always loved Chris Cornell, Jeff Buckley, bands like Def Leppard, REO Speedwagon, Skid Row… and I actually just played with Sebastian Bach, which was insane. Singing with one of your heroes is something you never forget.

Beyond album releases, do you have plans for live performances, multimedia projects, or advocacy work related to criminal justice reform that build on the momentum of “REDEMPTION” and your personal story?

Right now I’m not ready for a tour. I still have too much to say. I’ve already released four more songs since Redemption just in the last month and they’re all doing amazing. I think once people really hear me out and I know they want me in their hometown, I’ll come see them. For now, expect a LOT more music. The Dad Rock King is here.

“Say It Two Times,” the new single from award-winning Americana / country-rock artist Pam Ross, releasing February 13, alongside her forthcoming LP, Outside The Box.

“Say It Two Times” is a warm, emotionally grounded love song that celebrates reassurance, commitment, and the quiet beauty of everyday life. Built around vivid domestic imagery and a heartfelt chorus, the song captures the idea that love isn’t just spoken once—it’s something we need to hear, feel, and live every day. With its melodic ease and sincere delivery, the track showcases Pam’s signature strength as a storyteller who finds meaning in real moments rather than grand gestures.

Written by Pam Ross and produced with co-producer FJ Ventre, the track features Yvan Petit on lead guitar, FJ Ventre on bass and backing vocals, Dana Thalheimer on drums, and was mixed and mastered by Marc Frigo. The arrangement balances intimacy with polish, allowing the lyric and vocal performance to lead.

“Say It Two Times” appears on Pam’s upcoming LP Outside The Box, a seven-track collection that also includes fan favorites “Crazy Ride” and “Reading Your Text.” The album features six UK iTunes charting hits, further cementing Pam’s growing international reach and consistent connection with listeners.

Both the single and album will be available on February 13 across all major platforms. We’d love for you to consider “Say It Two Times” for airplay, review, or playlist inclusion. Pam is also available for interview by request.
