Certain songs, especially when paired with their music videos, can evoke profound thoughts about different facets of life. “Tides of Time” serves as the third single and the sixth track from Derev’s upcoming album, “Troubled Mind,” set to be released on March 26th.

Typically, I gravitate towards songs that feature a strong bassline as their foundation. I find that it adds a deep richness to the music. When combined with emotive, powerful vocals, exceptional guitar tones, and a solid rhythm, it creates something truly special. The soloing here is truly remarkable. I adore its nostalgic quality, reminiscent of the legendary math and progressive rock artists from the golden era of the ‘70s and ‘80s.

As the song progresses, haunting melodies intertwine with the complex rhythms, drawing listeners deeper into its emotional core. The lyrics, penned with raw honesty, explore the themes of nostalgia and the struggle to break free from the past. Michel’s drumming, both dynamic and precise, serves as the heartbeat of the track, driving the narrative forward with an intensity that mirrors the internal conflict described in the song. He elaborates: “Leaving my hometown in Syria at the age of 25, after having built so many wonderful friendships, memories, and experiences was a struggle I never knew I’d have to deal with until I did. Finding myself reminiscing over and over about my past life inspired me to write about it as a form of therapy. I never knew this was an actual mental diagnosis until I did some research on it.”

The bridge section offers a moment of reflection, where the instruments gradually build, echoing the feeling of mounting tension before releasing into a powerful crescendo. This climax is not just a musical high point but an emotional one, symbolizing the liberation from cognitive immobility and the acceptance of moving forward. In fact, this in my view serves the concept of the track perfectly. As explained earlier Derev’s drummer Michel Karakach wrote a song inspired by leaving his hometown, describing “Cognitive Immobility,” a mental trap where individuals attempt to recreate past experiences. This fixation leaves them stuck in a reality that no longer exists.

To me, Derev’s Tides of Time is more than just a song; it’s an experience that invites listeners to contemplate their journeys and the memories they hold dear. It’s a testament to Derev‘s ability to craft music that resonates on a deeply personal level while showcasing their technical prowess and artistic vision.
