A dense and swampy piece of stormy and delicate blues from Gary Dranow and his trusty band is always going to be an amazing way to start the week. ‘Masked Facade’ is no exception. A heavy and characterful release that sounds utterly beautiful, the song features everything that makes Gary Dranow stand out as a musician.

Based in Park City, Utah, The Gary Dranow Band is led by the titular Gary Dranow, a singer, songwriter, and guitarist whose soulful yells and crispy riffs and licks make his songs extremely attractive for lovers of blues and rock. ‘Masked Facade’ is the title track of Dranow’s latest album, a labor of love in the words of himself and of his longtime producer and collaborator, the Ukrainian Klym Apalkov. A concept album about a character with dissociative personality disorder, Masked Facade follows the dark and twisted narrative of Patrick, a loving and dedicated husband and workman by day, a serial killer preying on women by night, called Brian. The concept follows the involved story of the protagonist’s family, wife, son, and daughter, and the detective working to put him behind bars.

Musically, ‘Masked Facade’ starts with a juicy riff that just tells you a worthwhile listen will follow. The song is an apt introduction to the concept of the album, introducing the main character and the struggles ravaging inside him. It is also a terrific introduction to Dranow’s guitar magic, his songwriting sensibilities, as well as to his dramatic and soulful delivery. The blues melodies, ever so familiar and iconic, are beautifully balanced on ‘Masked Facade’. The blues in minor chords are sweet and tragic, the punchy production is tight, with a slow beat, a monstrous bass line, an rich walls of organs to support Dranow’s charismatic lead and rhythm playing and his gripping storytelling. Accompanied by a beautifully shot video that starkly displays the duality between the lives of Patrick and Brian, his ordinary days as an employee and a family man, and his predatory, deranged evenings, the clip elevates the song to an encompassing audio-visual delight that does a fantastic job setting the scene for what seems to be one of the album’s landmark blues rock releases.

A grandiose effort from The Gary Dranow Band that we’ve come to expect from the expert bluesman. Masked Facade is now eagerly anticipated, and the title song is a perfect teaser for all the haunting storytelling and bluesy goodness that is to come.

Gary Dranow is an artist known for his distinctive tone. I appreciate his genuine sound, which truly sets him apart from other bluesy rock releases. His latest track, “Broken Hearted Man,” delves into the profound sadness experienced by a man following the end of a significant relationship.

From the very first note, I can tell this track is destined to be an iconic success. His powerful, emotive vocals are truly remarkable. The lead guitar shines as a masterful element, with smooth licks that resonate beautifully and perfectly convey the song’s essence. Additionally, I appreciated the melodic structure and the tight rhythm, which really stand out. The lyrics reflect profound loss and longing, capturing themes of heartache that are essential to the blues genre. Soulful melodies and heartfelt vocals powerfully express the raw emotions of a man grappling with a broken heart. Every note resonates with authenticity, drawing the listener into a world of profound emotion and introspection. The rhythm section provides a solid backbone, driving the song forward while allowing the intricate guitar work to shine. It’s easy to get lost in the poignant storytelling, which captures the universal experience of love and loss. As the song unfolds, one can sense the cathartic journey the protagonist undergoes, making “Broken Hearted Man” a timeless piece that speaks to the core of human experience. Such artistry reaffirms Gary Dranow‘s place as a unique voice in the blues landscape, offering solace and connection through his music.

Gary Dranow embodies an adventurous spirit, constantly seeking new possibilities in both music and life. Born on March 10, 1954, in Santa Monica, his musical journey began at age 11 after hearing “Crossroads” by Cream, leading him to start his first band, The New Invaderz. His guitar collection has since flourished. As an entrepreneur, he founded several companies, including Spoiled Brats of California and First Manhattan Funding. Dranow collaborates with various musicians, such as Chris Zoupa and Klim Apalkov, continually exploring new creative ventures like their EDM project, Astralix. In my opinion, Gary Dranow serves as an outstanding role model for emerging artists. Cheers to that!

“China Rose” is a rocking song about an ambitious girl who has big dreams and is trying to reach places, but, in the real world, capitalism has other plans for her. You’ll see yourself in the folds of this story. Gary Dranow and The Manic Emotions will manage to conjure up all the hopes and aspirations your creative self had.

A dreamy intro opens the song, paving the way to a stellar vocal line narrating the bittersweet story. The composition is as shimmering as new dreams yet as head-hitting as the cruel reality. Proficiently and with sincere performances, the dream team paints the life of the girl who’s the “star on a silver screen.” The descriptive lyrics will seamlessly make you a part of this girl’s life, watching her dreams sparkle and then fade. You’ll witness, “The dreamer’s dream will soon disappear.”

Not just the lyricism; every component of the song will stir your heart to feel both compassionate and raging. The rebellious rock rhythms, the genuine vocals filled with raw emotions, and the high-quality production. It’s a tribute to the complexities of human experience and the profound evolution of self-awareness,” said Gary Dranow. Smoothly and artistically, every aspect of the song showcased these struggles and the attempts of the phoenix to rise out of the ashes.

It’s time for you to “leave this old world behind.” If you need a push, Gary Dranow’s “China Rose” below will offer you a bold one.

Gary Dranow’s “18, It’s Alright!” takes us on a very personal journey, showing us a side of Dranow we didn’t know and impressing us with another dynamic collaboration with The Manic Emotions. Are you ready to join the journey?

Courage is one of the endearing qualities of people, and I believe that it takes an artist a lot of courage to be real and choose to share their story with us. In the authentic journey of “18, It’s Alright,” Gary Dranow takes us to the part of his life where he struggles with mental health issues, affecting his relationships and life. Then Current Dranow assures both his young and us that it’s alright if you didn’t know better.

“18, It’s Alright” is a song that needs to be heard by each individual still stuck in their past struggles. For Dranow, it’s bipolar disorder and promiscuity; for each one of us, it could be anything, but are you ready to be moved and empowered by Dranow’s single and poignant performance and tell yourself that it’s alright?

An electrifying intro is our cue to prepare ourselves for going back in time to Dranow’s 18s. In a matter of seconds, you’ll be hypnotized by the solid structure of the infectious drums and guitar, the raw, touchy, and smooth vocal performance, and the well-written and thoughtfully chosen lyrics.

Once more, Gary Dranow and The Manic Emotion offer us an unforgettable odyssey! The instruments perfectly embody the struggles, challenges, and triumphs, illustrating the confused mind, the overwhelmed heart, and the proud, aware self. However, they still find their way to give an energetic sense. The storytelling in the lead vocals makes you feel as if you’ve lived this life and experienced this struggle. The solo part gives you a push to shift from past to present and enjoy the moment and the triumph as you enjoy the nostalgic groovy rock flair and the contemporary kick.

“18, It’s Alright!” might stir up some buried memories, but it ultimately delivers a powerful message of healing and acceptance through its Intimate vocals, heartfelt storytelling, and mesmerizing music.

Gary Dranow and The Manic Emotions‘ music is a favorite style that we can’t seem to get enough of. “Black Coal Lung” is a contemporary Americana anthem released on March 14, 2024. Let’s delve deeper into this captivating piece.

In line with their previous releases, Gary Dranow and The Manic Emotions aim to provide a diverse rock experience that appeals to a wide range of listeners. In addition to their musical prowess, they convey powerful messages through their lyrics. In their latest release, “Black Coal Lung,” they deliver a 5:42-minute anthemic track that sheds light on the challenges faced by communities dealing with environmental injustice.

The mellow guitar riffs, paired with the captivating harmonica melodies, embody their distinctive storytelling rock style, a mastery that sets them apart from other rock bands. What makes this track iconic is its revival of the original folk/Americana/rock genre that has been less prominent recently. The powerful message behind “The song sheds light on the harsh realities faced by communities near coal power plants. This song advocates for environmental activism and social justice, emphasizing the detrimental effects of industrial pollution on human well-being and respect.” – Gary Dranow

The song “Black Coal Lung” portrays the life in an Ohio town impacted by a coal power plant. It narrates the community’s challenges with toxic emissions leading to respiratory ailments. Families endure separation due to unsafe work environments, where the air is thick with coal dust, making it hard to breathe. In my view, this song serves as an Americana/rock anthem, highlighting a universal message that resonates across nations. Let’s embrace the underlying beauty and revel in it!

More of Gary Dranow’s weighted and mature rock goodness is always good news. With ‘Human 1.0’, Dranow and his band, the Manic Emotions, are displaying yet another face to their musical prowess. Having already covered his stoner rock face with ‘Mother’s Angry’, and his progressive side with the massive ‘JANE’, it wasn’t a surprise to see that ‘Human 1.0’ is just as crisp, well put together, and creative as both earlier listens, but the heaviness and the brashness of it were definitely fresh news.

Based in Park City, Utah, Gary Dranow is a singer, songwriter, and guitarist who is a hard rock veteran and mastermind. Spearheading the Manic Emotions, his band with members from America, Australia, and various cities in Ukraine, Gary Dranow’s lyrics are environmentally conscious and conservation of nature and nature’s wrath are two topics that usually preoccupy the band’s lyrics. ‘Human 1.0’ is a deliciously punchy and heavy single that follows in the same vein.

The heaviness, fitting to the lyrical darkness, does not come devoid of nuance and detail. Indeed, a band of craftsmen, the group are often driven to include intricacies in their music, lyrical, rhythmic, or melodic. With rhythmic trippiness and screams, ‘Human 1.0’ is easily one of the band’s most heavy handed songs to date, and the distorted, juicy bass tone helps massively in that aspect. With grand and cinematic strings to the song’s climactic outro melody, Gary Dranow has created once again a delightfully tight song.

Structured with a master’s attention to detail, Gary Dranow once again displays himself as a veteran songwriter on ‘Human 1.0’ and the Manic Emotions as endlessly capable musicians, ready to make the punchiest, most gratifying rock out there.
