Calling Jean Caffeine a veteran musician would be doing this joyful and inspired songwriter a disservice. Jean Caffeine and her latest single ‘Another Crying Christmas’ are testaments to decades spent honing multiple talents and curating a steadfast career.

Based in Austin, Texas, Jean Caffeine is the stage name of Jean Leider who was born in New York to a doctor father and a writer mother. Jean has been on her musical journey since she went to see the Rolling Stones live in 1975 at the Cow Palace. She plays drums and has been in a multitude of punk bands throughout the years, she is also an accomplished DJ with really prominent musical friends.

‘Another Crying Christmas’ showcases Jean Leider’s best qualities. A songwriting force capable of penning down sensibly catchy tunes that are easy on the ears and joyful to the senses, Jean Caffeine loves introducing lyrical twists that give her song a contrarian edge and make them more compelling listens. ‘Another Crying Christmas’ is a gorgeous sounding song with its scruffy, overdriven rhythm guitars, roomy and gloriously punchy drumming, Caffeine’s own subdued and melodic delivery, and of course, a fantastic arrangement that’s gripping and nuanced with hollered vocal ad-libs and a litany of very attractive drum fills.

Jean Caffeine’s latest single displays an artist with decades of experience under her wing. A carefully balanced song with a sweet and mischievous sound and a driving momentum that prods it steadily forward.

In the 80’s, Jean moved to NYC and hit the underground scene dj-ing in clubs and drumming in Pulsallama, a 7-13 piece all-female percussion ensemble who opened shows for The Clash. In 2016, the group was sampled by rapper Danny Brownon his song, “Dance in the Water.” Sundaze Records released a Pulallama record in 2020.

A move to Austin put her centre stage in Jean Caffeine‘s All-Nite Truckstop where she leaned heavily into cowpunk and Americana. She shifted from drummer to songwriter/front person and played roadhouses and coffee houses, sharing stages with Lucinda Williams, Townes Van Zandt, Brian Jonestown Massacre and Mojo Nixon.

(Sub)-genre fluid, Jean Caffeine blends indie, retro-pop, punk, folk, rock and roots, served up with big smiles and the occasional growl. “Mammogram,” is a shift from much of Jean’s music. “It’s moodier and spookier because mammograms are a nightmare,” she explains. That’s why Jean is releasing this single in time for Halloween. But “Mammogram” is also funny: part humorous novelty song, part PSA for breast health.

As a visual artist, she contributed animation to the film Waking Life, both films by Rick Linklater.
