With the re-release of this song, I found it to be a beautiful track about moving forward and persevering in life even when you don’t fully understand the fuller picture. Kama’s voice sounds so soothing and he sings from a mostly head-y and light place, showing his bright tone and how honest his emotional delivery is.

The upbeat and uplifting rock vibe of the song feels inspired by 2000s alternative rock, and surf-rock to a certain extent, but as Kama always does…there’s a twist. Highly detailed and multi-layered keyboards and synths drive the song with the rhythm guitars, and the thumpy sound of the snare drums further increase that feeling.

The song is also unconventionally structured, with a long bridge/movement section in between the verses that allows all the instruments to shine, and shows us a bit more of Kama’s vocal range and how he emotes with it. All in all, this one of Kama Tala‘s most special songs because it’s one of the most positive-sounding and uplifting ones, and Kama does it with style, authenticity, and relatability that you don’t find many artists doing nowadays.

Kama Tala’s journey with W.A.M. began with previous nominations, but this year, he reached a milestone. Reflecting on the announcement, he shared, “I was nominated for two songs this year, including The Wayside, which earned a nod for Best Lyrics. That alone was an incredible accomplishment.”

The Making of “Monterey (Reprise)”

Written and recorded during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Monterey (Reprise) emerged as a beacon of hope amidst uncertain times. “I wanted to create something beautiful for the future,” Kama Tala explained. Drawing inspiration from John Steinbeck, The Beach Boys, and Vampire Weekend, he crafted a surf-pop anthem infused with literary nuance and personal reflection.

The journey to perfecting the song was not without its hurdles. “Trial and error were the biggest challenges,” he admitted. “But when I recorded the harmony parts—the ‘why eyyy eyy eyy eyy’—everything came together in a way that felt special. I knew I had something unique.”

The title’s “Reprise” element reflects a remastering of the track in 2023, enhancing its sound to reach new heights.

For Kama Tala, this award carries deep personal and professional significance. “Seeing my mother’s face when they announced it made my entire year,” he said. While the recognition is an honor, Kama remains humble: “I feel the same. It’s awesome to have this exposure if it helps more people hear the music.”

Looking Ahead

Kama Tala’s artistic momentum continues. Fans can look forward to new music, including an exciting collaboration with Jessi Lee, set for release in late 2024. When asked about his advice to aspiring artists, he emphasized authenticity: “Write music you like. Write honestly, and people will feel it. Think outside the box.”

As for his dream collaborations? “I’d love to be in a room with Zilchman and Rick Rubin.”

Revisiting the song wasn’t easy for Kama, as the relationship that inspired it had ended by the time he re-recorded the vocals. Despite that, he absolutely managed to stay true to the original lyrics, preserving the emotional story behind the track. This remix isn’t just a new version of “Plurals”—it’s a symbol of growth and moving forward, turning personal heartbreak into a fresh start and a point of development.

“Plurals” (Remix) is the perfect rebirth of a song that already had so much at heart, blending relatable emotions with an irresistible pop vibe. Kama Tala proves his ability to take life’s highs and lows and craft them into music that connects; reminding us that heartbreaks are not necessarily the end, they rather are the start of new journeys. 

“Release” employs a harmonic mix of guitar, bass, percussion, and alto saxophone among its instrumentation. With the bassline especially notable for its smooth, flowing character, which drives the song ahead and adds depth, the guitar and bass lay a strong basis. Played subtly, the drums reinforce the beat without overwhelming the other sounds, therefore enabling the vocals and saxophone to take center stage.

A highlight is Jessi Lee’s saxophone performance, which moves in and out of the arrangement with a feeling of freedom that reflects the song’s subjects. Her passionate and precise saxophone technique delivers emotional jabs the listener will find very resonant.

• First of all, I would like to welcome you and thank you for being with us today. This is not the first time we feature an article about you on REM, but every time you manage to surprise us with an even more beautiful release. Can you backtrack a little and tell us the story of who you are and how you started making music?

Thanks for having me.

• Your artist name is derived from Sanskrit, if I’m not wrong, so please tell me why you chose this name and what it means.

Kama Tala comes from Sanskrit. Translated ‘Kama’ means love, lust, passion, and ‘Tala’ means rhythm, meter, or the measurement of time. When combined something struck me. It was something organic, meaningful and symbolic, and admittingly borrowed, but as authentic as I try to make my music. 

• You won a major award back in 2022, what was that for and how did they contact you? 

I contacted them a few years beforehand. Part of the music business, just like any other- is making connections. When the time came and I felt like I had something good enough recorded, I submitted my music to them for consideration. W.A.M. is a kick-ass organization out of Austin, helping independent artists so it was a no brainer for me to work with groups like them. 

• In 2023 you started releasing more music in the form of singles. Why did you opt for that instead of making an album or an EP instead?

I love the idea of making albums. The first thing Kama Tala did was essentially a concept album, however, in order for KT to gain any traction in the modern world, releasing singles has just made more sense. I look forward to working on an album in the future, but for 2024, I have 4 other singles lined up as we speak. 

• Congratulations on your new single ‘Sultans (Reprise)’ by the way. I truly loved it. What’s the inspiration behind this song and what do the lyrics mean, If I may ask?

Cheers & many thanks. The song was inspired by my father. I was determined to write a song that would be a #1 hit single in the year 1958. I started off with the guitar riff (which was inspired by George Harrison). The rest was written and composed as an Everly Brothers song to commemorate the times in a nostalgic way, to pay tribute, but also to add some flavor of what I have to add from a 2024 perspective in terms of recording. It’s funny, I was listening to a tune the other day, and this is going to out date me…’Carry Anne’ by the Hollies, but listening to how their producer decided to mix their song, which is a song I love, made me me appreciate so much how Zilchman (my producer) approached the mix on ‘Sultans’. He crushed it out of the park in my opinion. 

• I had the pleasure of reviewing your previous release called ‘Provenance’ before, but it sounds really different from Sultans…which brings me to the next question: how do you keep your tracks so coherent and related to your musical identity while also drawing inspiration from many different sources and not sounding identical?

Provenance and Sultans (Reprise) are two totally different songs for sure. But I think what links them most is that they are authentic and just came from the heart. They were written at different times and I had different objectives with each song, but what I’ve learned over the years is if you sing with authenticity and soul in that moment…that realness or truth or whatever you want to call it can be felt in the moment and that has resonated with people which has led me to not overthink it and just sing in the moment what I am feeling. 

• In your opinion, how does a rock artist stay relevant in 2024 compared to the past?

The only thing that has worked for me in any aspect of my life is to just be thankful to be breathing today and do what you can with the time you have.

• Do you plan on touring in the near future? If so, do you have any venues in particular?

Yes. But we can talk about this off camera once the interview is over. Again, it’s too early to say and I’m just happy to be here right now talking to you. 

• If you had a chance to collaborate with any artist or band, living or dead, who would you choose?

There are hundreds of artists I’d love to work with now. To answer your question, as a fly on the wall, I’d love to see the process of a few musicians…Sufjan Stevens, Bela Fleck & The Flecktones, Vampire Weekend. 

• Last but not least, what kind of songs do you plan on releasing in the future? Like…can we expect any different genres or twists?

Yes, I have songs already set for release coming soon. And yes you can expect different genres and twists. With the Spring, I tried to bring a throwback vibe. The summer I have some more modern plans. I’m working again with Zilchman on a release I expect for July. That is a more top 40 feel. Right now it’s entitled ‘Project 20’. But it’s been in the vault for 4 months and I can’t wait for people to hear it. Thank you again….many cheers.

Back to Sultans (Reprise), the track is 3 minutes short, and I only say that because I loved the atmosphere too much and didn’t want the song to end. The guitars have a bright and clear tone, which gives you the summer vibes that we kinda need starting now. The drums play a very interesting rhythm which I referred to as beach rock because of how light the snare drum sounds, despite the hard-hitting kicks. The bass guitar ties all these elements beautifully and the bassline will get you to dance or at least tap your feet while listening because of how energizing and pumping it is. 

INTERVIEW WITH KAMA TALA

Last but not least, the element that makes this song so distinctive is Kama Tala‘s Phenomenal vocal delivery. The light singing style and bright tone with a tiny bit of nasality make for a very memorable and sweet vocal setting. But make no mistake, Tala knows when to push the tone and make it thicker and when to sing softly and add a little bit of a breathy sound that will remind you of Bono or Sting…it’s deceptively simple and 100% effective for emotional impact. 

The bottom line is: this track has all the right elements that make a summer smash hit, and you should check it out but beware of those three minutes that are guaranteed to be stuck in your head all summer (and probably all year) long.

A few seconds shy of three minutes, the song’s bass line lures you into its lead melodies and raspy vocals that demand you to remember how you used to live in the past, your old love and maybe your hometown for those who had to move. It’s like a compilation of all the beautiful warmth that the singer’s home provided, and you can’t help but relate to his longing for home and feel like those lyrics address your past as you listen to the strong and anthemic vocal delivery. The brightly toned keys and heavily affected distorted guitars further solidify this feeling, and at the song’s hook, we hear some horns that make for a bright and funky/bluesy atmosphere. It’s an all-around wonderful balance of instruments with a stellar mix.

All in all, this song strives to bring its listeners home, especially when the keyboard borrows some melodies from the guitar and it signifies an old sound making its way back into your life. It’s such a beautiful narrative carried by bright melodies, flawless vocals, and a stomping rhythm that will be stuck in your head for days after first listening to it.
