Recall the 80s artists who produced memorable pop hits while incorporating a solid rock music foundation? Kama Tala is back with another infectious track called “Progràmma.” Let’s explore more about it below.

From the very first guitar melody, I sensed we had another hit on our hands. Kama Tala is an American singer-songwriter, instrumentalist, and producer, with a name derived from Sanskrit. His musical influences encompass neo-soul, rock, surf, and contemporary pop. Just like the other songs we’ve previously enjoyed, we’re diving into “Progràmma,” which showcases a new level of mastery from this talented artist.

The expressive vocals, memorable guitar melodies, and the atmospheric 80s keyboard sounds all contribute to a fantastic vibe for every listener. Oh! Have I mentioned the solo? IT’S UNIQUE AND IMPRESSIVE! In fact, I typically gravitate towards guitar solos featuring this particular tone.

According to Kama Tala, the song was created last January form A to Z. As he emphasised; “It was one of those tunes that just clicked instantly.” “Progràmma,” created in January 2025, features a four-on-the-floor drum beat, followed by a chord progression and intro lick. After recording, Tala collaborated with producer Zilchman, who suggested changes to the chorus melody. Tala added lyrics and recorded a demo. Zilchman enhanced the track with a strong bassline and a spacey element in the breakdown, inspired by 1980s pop, to create a captivating hook.

In conclusion, I want to reinforce what I shared in my earlier writings about Kama Tala‘s music. I truly believe we are on the verge of witnessing the emergence of a future pop-rock star. Cheers to that!

SUCH A FUN AND UPLIFTING RELEASE!

Kama Tala’s “Aurelia” is indeed a sonic gem that radiates creativity and musical prowess. This track delivers an exhilarating blend of genres, demonstrating why Kama Tala continues to captivate audiences with his inventive artistry. True to his signature style, Kama seamlessly weaves a variety of musical influences to give birth to a vibrant tapestry of world music that feels fresh, eclectic, and wholly original!

“Aurelia,” meaning “The Golden One,” lives up to its name with a shimmering charm. The song unfolds like a musical theater piece, with dramatic verses leading into an irresistibly whimsical hook. Kama’s dynamic vocals shift between Middle Eastern-inspired inflections and pop-rock confidence, while Jessi Lee’s killer saxophone lines add layers of soul and sophistication. Her contributions, shaped by her creative brilliance, elevate the song to new heights.

The instrumental work is just as impressive. Kama’s interplay of country and blues guitars with jazzy chords sets a rich, textured foundation. Every element feels deliberate yet playful, from the intricate horn arrangements to the meticulous production polish by Zilchman. Their collective effort is a masterclass in collaboration, resulting in a soundscape that is as uplifting as it is engaging.

“Aurelia” is the epitome of fun and versatility, drawing listeners into a genre-defying celebration of music. Kama Tala has once again proved his knack for delivering heartfelt, boundary-pushing tracks that connect on a universal level. If you’re looking for a song that blends technical brilliance with emotional resonance, this one is pure gold!

What You’ve Been Through (Meanwhile) is the latest single by Kama Tala, one of my favourite criminally underrated artists. The song was first released in January of 2024, but was sadly taken off the platforms due to Kama facing an accident and health issues that made him unable to properly promote it.

With the re-release of this song, I found it to be a beautiful track about moving forward and persevering in life even when you don’t fully understand the fuller picture. Kama’s voice sounds so soothing and he sings from a mostly head-y and light place, showing his bright tone and how honest his emotional delivery is.

The upbeat and uplifting rock vibe of the song feels inspired by 2000s alternative rock, and surf-rock to a certain extent, but as Kama always does…there’s a twist. Highly detailed and multi-layered keyboards and synths drive the song with the rhythm guitars, and the thumpy sound of the snare drums further increase that feeling.

The song is also unconventionally structured, with a long bridge/movement section in between the verses that allows all the instruments to shine, and shows us a bit more of Kama’s vocal range and how he emotes with it. All in all, this one of Kama Tala‘s most special songs because it’s one of the most positive-sounding and uplifting ones, and Kama does it with style, authenticity, and relatability that you don’t find many artists doing nowadays.

We Are the Music Makers (W.A.M.) has awarded Kama Tala the prestigious Grand Prize at the 2024 W.A.M. Awards for his remarkable song Monterey (Reprise). This recognition highlights the independent artist’s originality, musicianship, and dedication to his craft, elevating his name among the leaders of independent music.

Kama Tala’s journey with W.A.M. began with previous nominations, but this year, he reached a milestone. Reflecting on the announcement, he shared, “I was nominated for two songs this year, including The Wayside, which earned a nod for Best Lyrics. That alone was an incredible accomplishment.”

The Making of “Monterey (Reprise)”

Written and recorded during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Monterey (Reprise) emerged as a beacon of hope amidst uncertain times. “I wanted to create something beautiful for the future,” Kama Tala explained. Drawing inspiration from John Steinbeck, The Beach Boys, and Vampire Weekend, he crafted a surf-pop anthem infused with literary nuance and personal reflection.

The journey to perfecting the song was not without its hurdles. “Trial and error were the biggest challenges,” he admitted. “But when I recorded the harmony parts—the ‘why eyyy eyy eyy eyy’—everything came together in a way that felt special. I knew I had something unique.”

The title’s “Reprise” element reflects a remastering of the track in 2023, enhancing its sound to reach new heights.

For Kama Tala, this award carries deep personal and professional significance. “Seeing my mother’s face when they announced it made my entire year,” he said. While the recognition is an honor, Kama remains humble: “I feel the same. It’s awesome to have this exposure if it helps more people hear the music.”

Looking Ahead

Kama Tala’s artistic momentum continues. Fans can look forward to new music, including an exciting collaboration with Jessi Lee, set for release in late 2024. Think outside the box.”

As for his dream collaborations? “I’d love to be in a room with Zilchman and Rick Rubin.”

Kama Tala breathes new life into his track “Plurals” with a remix that takes the song into a new, fresh, and energetic direction. Originally written during a long-distance relationship, “Plurals” captures the excitement and heartache of being apart from someone you love. The memorable lyric “we can’t do airports and goodbyes forever” perfectly sums up the bittersweet reality of long-distance relationships, and it’s this kind of personal touch that defines Kama Tala’s music.

In this remix, producer Zilchman reimagines the track, transforming it from its tender, raw form into a vibrant pop anthem. While the original version leaned into softer emotions, this new take bursts with energy, adding a catchy and upbeat twist without losing its initial emotional depth. Zilchman’s production shines here, giving “Plurals” a new rhythm and feel, showing the versatility of Kama Tala’s sound.

Revisiting the song wasn’t easy for Kama, as the relationship that inspired it had ended by the time he re-recorded the vocals. Despite that, he absolutely managed to stay true to the original lyrics, preserving the emotional story behind the track. This remix isn’t just a new version of “Plurals”—it’s a symbol of growth and moving forward, turning personal heartbreak into a fresh start and a point of development.

“Plurals” (Remix) is the perfect rebirth of a song that already had so much at heart, blending relatable emotions with an irresistible pop vibe. Kama Tala proves his ability to take life’s highs and lows and craft them into music that connects; reminding us that heartbreaks are not necessarily the end, they rather are the start of new journeys.

Kama Tala‘s “Release” is a very emotional song with a 3/4 time signature that gives it a distinctive waltz-like beat unusual in the blues and soul genres this song mostly pulls from. The 3/4 time signature offers a flowing, dancy feeling that accentuates the ideas of release and emotional emancipation the lyrics address. Beginning with a more subdued intro and progressively layering instruments and vocals to reach a strong climax before gently easing into a reflective outro, the song structure clearly and deliberately develops.

Inspired by the work of musicians like Bill Withers and Amy Winehouse, the song’s approach combines old soul and blues with a contemporary touch. The vocal approach and instrumentation of the song clearly show the influence of soul and vintage blues, nevertheless, it has a modern edge that makes it up-to-date and new. Jessi Lee’s saxophone adds a deep, warm dimension to the song by bringing a jazz element match with musicians like Norah Jones or John Coltrane.

“Release” employs a harmonic mix of guitar, bass, percussion, and alto saxophone among its instrumentation. With the bassline especially notable for its smooth, flowing character, which drives the song ahead and adds depth, the guitar and bass lay a strong basis. Played subtly, the drums reinforce the beat without overwhelming the other sounds, therefore enabling the vocals and saxophone to take center stage.

A highlight is Jessi Lee’s saxophone performance, which moves in and out of the arrangement with a feeling of freedom that reflects the song’s subjects. Her passionate and precise saxophone technique delivers emotional jabs the listener will find very resonant.

Every instrument and voice line are precisely matched to provide a coherent sound, therefore reflecting the excellent production quality. Reverb on the saxophone and vocals give the song a broad, ambient aspect that increases its emotional effect.

Kama Tala’s vocals are touching, delivering the song’s themes of heartache, understanding, and eventually being released with conviction. His voice carries a weight of experience, perfectly suited to the bluesy, soulful nature of the song. This reminds me of BB King; the vocal delivery is both personal and strong, guiding the listener into the emotive trip.

Reflective and profound, ” Release” explores the process of letting go and discovering liberation via emotional release. Added in the revised form of the song, the chorus offers a cathartic moment that echoes long after the song finishes, thus powerfully affirming this subject.

Though it combines elements of jazz and modern pop to increase its appeal, ” Release” fits well in the blues and vintage soul genres. One of the song’s virtues is its genre-blending approach, which allows a broad audience to enjoy it while also maintaining the authenticity and depth of its inspirations.

“Release” is a must-listener for lovers of blues, soul, and jazz; it not only honors its inspirations but also creates a place for itself in the modern music scene.

Today we are joined by one of my favourite up-and-coming artists from the US, the fascinating Mr Kama Tala. With a wide variety of influences, his music finds its way into your head and keeps replaying over and over again no matter how much you try to escape it. We had the pleasure of chatting with Tala and asking him about the elements that make his music successful and what keeps him inspired to create more fun tracks.

First of all, I would like to welcome you and thank you for being with us today. This is not the first time we feature an article about you on REM, but every time you manage to surprise us with an even more beautiful release. Can you backtrack a little and tell us the story of who you are and how you started making music?

Thanks for having me.

Your artist name is derived from Sanskrit, if I’m not wrong, so please tell me why you chose this name and what it means.

Kama Tala comes from Sanskrit. Translated ‘Kama’ means love, lust, passion, and ‘Tala’ means rhythm, meter, or the measurement of time. When combined something struck me. It was something organic, meaningful and symbolic, and admittingly borrowed, but as authentic as I try to make my music.

You won a major award back in 2022, what was that for and how did they contact you?

I contacted them a few years beforehand. Part of the music business, just like any other- is making connections. When the time came and I felt like I had something good enough recorded, I submitted my music to them for consideration. W.A.M. is a kick-ass organization out of Austin, helping independent artists so it was a no brainer for me to work with groups like them.

In 2023 you started releasing more music in the form of singles. Why did you opt for that instead of making an album or an EP instead?

I love the idea of making albums. The first thing Kama Tala did was essentially a concept album, however, in order for KT to gain any traction in the modern world, releasing singles has just made more sense. I look forward to working on an album in the future, but for 2024, I have 4 other singles lined up as we speak.

Congratulations on your new single ‘Sultans (Reprise)’ by the way. I truly loved it. What’s the inspiration behind this song and what do the lyrics mean, If I may ask?

Cheers & many thanks. The song was inspired by my father. I was determined to write a song that would be a #1 hit single in the year 1958. I started off with the guitar riff (which was inspired by George Harrison). The rest was written and composed as an Everly Brothers song to commemorate the times in a nostalgic way, to pay tribute, but also to add some flavor of what I have to add from a 2024 perspective in terms of recording. It’s funny, I was listening to a tune the other day, and this is going to out date me…’Carry Anne’ by the Hollies, but listening to how their producer decided to mix their song, which is a song I love, made me me appreciate so much how Zilchman (my producer) approached the mix on ‘Sultans’. He crushed it out of the park in my opinion.

I had the pleasure of reviewing your previous release called ‘Provenance’ before, but it sounds really different from Sultans…which brings me to the next question: how do you keep your tracks so coherent and related to your musical identity while also drawing inspiration from many different sources and not sounding identical?

Provenance and Sultans (Reprise) are two totally different songs for sure. But I think what links them most is that they are authentic and just came from the heart. They were written at different times and I had different objectives with each song, but what I’ve learned over the years is if you sing with authenticity and soul in that moment…that realness or truth or whatever you want to call it can be felt in the moment and that has resonated with people which has led me to not overthink it and just sing in the moment what I am feeling.

In your opinion, how does a rock artist stay relevant in 2024 compared to the past?

The only thing that has worked for me in any aspect of my life is to just be thankful to be breathing today and do what you can with the time you have.

READ REVIEW – SULTANS (REPRISE)

Do you plan on touring in the near future? If so, do you have any venues in particular?

Yes. But we can talk about this off camera once the interview is over. Again, it’s too early to say and I’m just happy to be here right now talking to you.

If you had a chance to collaborate with any artist or band, living or dead, who would you choose?

There are hundreds of artists I’d love to work with now. To answer your question, as a fly on the wall, I’d love to see the process of a few musicians…Sufjan Stevens, Bela Fleck & The Flecktones, Vampire Weekend.

Last but not least, what kind of songs do you plan on releasing in the future? Like…can we expect any different genres or twists?

Yes, I have songs already set for release coming soon. And yes you can expect different genres and twists. With the Spring, I tried to bring a throwback vibe. The summer I have some more modern plans. I’m working again with Zilchman on a release I expect for July. That is a more top 40 feel. Right now it’s entitled ‘Project 20’. But it’s been in the vault for 4 months and I can’t wait for people to hear it. Thank you again….many cheers.

At the end of the day, I would like to thank you for giving us some of your valuable time and information, and it’s always a pleasure having you here. ‘Provenance‘ and ‘Sultans (Reprise)’ are out on all platforms now, so be sure to check them out and follow Kama Tala on all his social media accounts to stay updated.

Since 2023, one of our beloved artists here Kama Tala has been releasing a single almost every month, and we’re loving it. His latest release, Sultans (Reprise), sounds a lot like a beach rock anthem, a 2000s alt-rock piece, and a classic rock tune from the good old 70s all merged into one beautiful sound. I recently had a chat with Tala and asked him how he balances his sounds with all these influences thrown in, you can check it out here.

Back to Sultans (Reprise), the track is 3 minutes short, and I only say that because I loved the atmosphere too much and didn’t want the song to end. The guitars have a bright and clear tone, which gives you the summer vibes that we kinda need starting now. The drums play a very interesting rhythm which I referred to as beach rock because of how light the snare drum sounds, despite the hard-hitting kicks. The bass guitar ties all these elements beautifully and the bassline will get you to dance or at least tap your feet while listening because of how energizing and pumping it is.

INTERVIEW WITH KAMA TALA

Last but not least, the element that makes this song so distinctive is Kama Tala‘s Phenomenal vocal delivery. The light singing style and bright tone with a tiny bit of nasality make for a very memorable and sweet vocal setting. But make no mistake, Tala knows when to push the tone and make it thicker and when to sing softly and add a little bit of a breathy sound that will remind you of Bono or Sting…it’s deceptively simple and 100% effective for emotional impact.

The bottom line is: this track has all the right elements that make a summer smash hit, and you should check it out but beware of those three minutes that are guaranteed to be stuck in your head all summer (and probably all year) long.

The prime reason this song feels like a joyful homecoming anthem is how beautifully catchy the keyboard and guitar conversations sound. Kama Tala has once again succeeded in telling a story just by the choice of sounds and tones that he implemented into this track.

A few seconds shy of three minutes, the song’s bass line lures you into its lead melodies and raspy vocals that demand you to remember how you used to live in the past, your old love and maybe your hometown for those who had to move. It’s like a compilation of all the beautiful warmth that the singer’s home provided, and you can’t help but relate to his longing for home and feel like those lyrics address your past as you listen to the strong and anthemic vocal delivery. The brightly toned keys and heavily affected distorted guitars further solidify this feeling, and at the song’s hook, we hear some horns that make for a bright and funky/bluesy atmosphere. It’s an all-around wonderful balance of instruments with a stellar mix.

All in all, this song strives to bring its listeners home, especially when the keyboard borrows some melodies from the guitar and it signifies an old sound making its way back into your life. It’s such a beautiful narrative carried by bright melodies, flawless vocals, and a stomping rhythm that will be stuck in your head for days after first listening to it. This song is strong enough to be one of this year’s spring/summer hits and I hope to see it making its way to bigger playlists and live events so more listeners can have a listen and rejoice their memories as they listen to it.

The latest single “Luna” by Kama Tala radiates crunchy vintage rock vibes! This song beautifully merges the Latin meaning of the moon with Kama’s unique American perspective. Let’s dive in and explore this intriguing blend!

While listening to Sam Cooke’s ‘Bring It On Home to Me’, the inspiration for ‘Luna’ struck. Initially crafted with an acoustic guitar and straightforward lyrics, the song evolved by incorporating a keyboard, Fender Stratocaster, bass guitar, and drums. The keyboard melody sparked a new creative path, prompting the inclusion of a horn section for a unique twist. Kama Tala’s song creation process stands out for its distinctiveness, reminiscent of the bygone golden era. Reflecting on the production, Kama Tala shared, “The method involved discarding initial lyrics, focusing on melodies, and later shaping a cohesive narrative. The introduction of the horn section introduced a fresh musical motif, challenging the lyrical composition.”

This is a challenge for many new artists nowadays, often resulting in disappointing outcomes. However, Kama excels at skillfully blending lyrics, vocals, and music together flawlessly! Kama faced recording challenges due to cold weather but found inspiration from a friend’s photo of a red full moon, leading to the creation of a song about missing someone and coming home. The song explores the feelings of being distant and the contrast between joy and sadness. The lyrics reflect a sense of melancholy but end on a hopeful note, emphasizing the theme of returning home.

Last week, I introduced you all to “The Sentinel,” and today we have another catchy rock hit that further solidifies my belief that he will soon become one of the most inspiring rock icons. Cheers to that!
