This is the kind of tonality that’ll make you want to gaze longingly from the window of a moving train. It’s made to be a reflective space to process emotional baggage and learn how to deal with it, and Paparone manages to create that space beautifully. The sound is not unique, but the intention and delivery are here, which is all that matters, if you ask me, anyway.

Thematically, “Teenage Dream” is about letting go of the past, of emotional weight, and of the pressure to live out someone else’s vision of who you should be. It’s well-trodden lyrical territory, but Paparone’s references situate it in a lineage that treats that kind of introspection seriously rather than decoratively. For a debut single recorded in a row home, it punches with more atmosphere than it has any right to.

The palette shifts constantly across the record – from organic guitar-led blues-rock to electronic drift to full dancefloor pulse – but there’s a cohesive emotional logic to it that makes the whole thing feel like a single piece rather than a collection of stylistic experiments.

“Sea Change” is the best way to start this album. It’s a soulful blues-rock song, living on the analogue side of the spectrum with a guitar-centric rhythm section and huge-sounding acoustic drums with heavy cymbal hits. Slowly, the song introduces the electronic elements that will stay for the majority of the album, as will the impeccable melodic sense of the entire band.

“Light It Up” is another example of that fantastic gradient of colors – much like the northern lights themselves. It starts with a very simple piano arrangement but across its runtime introduces a hook played on a synthesizer, and with every repeat of the chorus, some kind of distorted vocal layer gets added, building depth and intensity as it swells and fades out.

“Northern Lights,” the title track, is the first instance of something angular on the album. The arpeggiated sequence it opens with is lopsided in a way that captures your attention immediately, but when the more stable rhythmic devices get introduced, it suddenly feels like home. In my mind, it mirrors that initial feeling of awe where something new feels foreign, then you acclimate to it. The outro is particularly great – the harmonized vocoder keeps rising dramatically in a tastefully epic way that earns the swell.

“The Depths” is the personal standout. Who doesn’t want to party on the ocean floor, in the depths where all of life began? The Daft Punk influence is strong here, but the song also – and I mean this in the best possible way – sounds like a great underwater level in a video game. It’s genuinely a blast to listen to, all the synths dialed to perfection, all the textures working together. The reason it’s so exceptional is the drumming carrying the dynamics, stopping the song from collapsing into a static EDM beat and keeping it alive and breathing all the way through.

der Mist close the album with “The End,” a cathartic ballad that frames the ending as relief rather than loss, with dramatic and epic chord changes that appropriately seal off this colorful record. But the moment the song becomes truly special is at 1:43, where the band ramps to a frenzy in perfect unison – the kind of section that would be genuinely electric to witness live. With Northern Lights building momentum for the duo and the album already earning radio support, a live run feels like the natural next move. Hopefully, it happens soon.

Separation Team is the title of Siren Section’s latest album. The duo is composed of James Cumberland and John Dowling, two prolific songwriters who have been collaborating for more than 20 years, with a sound that blends post punk, dream pop, shoegaze, and electronica for a quite eclectic set of results.

We can witness the whole broadband within the span of this record’s first 15 minutes. After a pair of relentless electronic anthems, ‘Construct’ and ‘Bullet Train’, the duo quite efficiently pull back the brakes for the soft and airy ‘Solidarity’, bringing to their listeners the shoegaze part of the formula. The lengthy and winding 4th cut ‘Medicine’ also lies in the second category with ‘Solidarity’. With a sound that recalls iconic shoegazers Cocteau Twins and Slowdive, this long winding song is an achievement that blends the electronic elements very neatly with the duo’s trademark soft and murky songwriting.

‘Flinch’ is a showstopping piece of IDM that takes a sharp left turn. Presenting threatening synth stabs and unstoppable 808 beats on top of throbbing and droning sub bass, ‘Flinch’ is a classic sound whose lovers can just not get enough of. Brilliant. There is little variation along the piece’s 5 minute runtime, a trademark of dance music that lends the piece a very hypnotic feel. ‘Marker’ comes after a short, cloudy interlude, giving the album’s softest and plushiest offering up til this point. With its open-ended chord sequences and free time feel, ‘Marker’ is a precious point of respite in Separation Team’s relentless marathon.

Rock tendencies show up in the following ‘Dangerous To Know’. With its steady beat and more discernible melodies, the duo pull back on the shoegaze haziness for something that’s more direct and sweet. The massive and cinematic pairing of ‘Tritagonist’ 1 and 2 are massive and immersive electronic rock offerings that balance electronic mayhem with acoustic gentleness, with the second part being led by the album’s first acoustic guitar offering till this point in its runtime, just past its midpoint. The second part is properly progressive, gaining weight and momentum as it goes along, until it ends with a soft, patient climax that summons to mind the involved compositions of My Bloody Valentine.

12th cut ‘Deer Hunter’ is a showstopping and gentle, piano ballad that softens the punch of the earlier, battering ‘Minotaur’, and paves the way for ‘Glass Cannon’ of the album’s lead singles. This cut manages to remind me of Pink Floyd’s Division Bell-era compositions. Especially with its hushed baritone singing and optimistic chord sequences that are injected with a dose of potent melancholy. ‘Timeghost’ is perhaps the album’s most experimental cut to this point. With its hollered vocals and chromatic movements, this piece offers some of the album’s eeriest atmospheres.

Entering the album’s final legs with the syrupy and floating ‘Ritual’, Siren Section still manage to show new facets of their songwriting talents, this time with a pop-inspired chord progression, and a syncopated groove that prods the song along at a very leisurely and enjoyable pace. One of the album’s more accessible cuts. The duo follows with one more heartfelt piano ballad. The enigmatically titled ‘Some of this Means Everything’ has a cliche, moving chord progression, a slow and methodic pace, and prominent voice to accompany the shimmering piano chords. The album’s longest cut, the penultimate ‘Carry Through’, does a wonderful job just blending it all together. With stirring chord sequences, a present groove, prominent vocals with gripping melodies, and a lot of electronic wizardry in the mix, ‘Carry Through’ is an engaging and exciting offering that showcases the duo at the top of their game.

Closing the lengthy and eccentric journey of Separation Team with the lovely and melodic ‘Five Fifty Five’, Siren Section brings the journey to a bittersweet conclusion that leaves a lasting mark. Siren Section’s music and smart lyrical content display a pair of gifted artists whose visions coincide quite neatly on one another, bringing in harmony a litany of musical ideas that should normally not work together. But not only do Siren Section make it work, they also make from it something quite unique, personal, and unforgettable.

The soundscape blooms slowly, with guitars that wobble and glow in a 70s-inspired haze: curious, slightly eccentric tones that give the track its offbeat charm. A relaxed funk rhythm hums underneath, steady but never intrusive, creating a groove that carries you without pushing. Layered female harmonies drift in and out like a warm breeze, forming a kind of whispered collective that soothes more than it commands.

Though this is the mellowest piece in Plastic Orchestra’s catalogue so far, it still holds an unmistakable pulse. There’s a playful undercurrent reminiscent of Pipe Eye and Tom Tom Club, something delightfully odd but deeply intentional, born from the band’s love of tinkering, experimenting, and turning every piece of gear into a new voice.

Plastic Orchestra’s “Crick in the Neck” settles into the mind in that gentle, unhurried way: not demanding attention, but rewarding it. It’s a soft reminder that strength isn’t about bracing yourself endlessly. Sometimes it’s simply knowing when to put the weight down and let your spine breathe.

There’s a flicker of 80s unease: bright on the surface, shadowed underneath. The rhythm section walks with purpose, carrying a pulse that feels half-determined, half-uncertain, as though the song itself is pacing through late-night doubts. Over it all, RIOT SON delivers a vocal performance that balances sharpness with fragility. His tone never settles: hovering between sarcasm and sincerity, mirroring the contradictions at the heart of the lyrics.

You can hear the echoes of The Cars and The Police in the melody’s clean edges, the brooding influence of Interpol and Joy Division in its depth, and a more modern emotional layering inspired by figures like Joey Ramone, Elliott Smith, and Lil Peep. Yet none of these references overshadow the artist’s own presence. The sound is unmistakably his: lean, cinematic, and rendered with the solitude of a home studio surrounded by the shifting colors of Boone’s autumn.

Lyrically, the song circles around the fragile architecture of relationships: the way doubt sneaks in, how indecision becomes its own form of gravity, and how longing sometimes feels clearer than certainty. Instead of offering answers, RIOT SON turns the questions themselves into the emotional core, letting ambiguity resonate without forcing resolution.
