“GRIST” is the second in a new series of 30 song double albums, following up “IN ALL MY NIGHTMARES I AM ALONE”, which was itself just released on June 30th. Fans of Swans, 90’s and ‘blackstar’-era David Bowie, Sonic Youth, Skinny Puppy, Ministry, Nick Cave, Portishead, Chelsea Wolfe, The Stooges, Faith No More, Tom Waits and PJ Harvey should enjoy this strange yet cohesive collection. 

“GRIST”  hunts, laughs, mourns, challenges and inspires others to step into their true selves without fear. The themes are wide but related, with philosophy, mental illness, death of loved ones, addiction, spirituality, surrealism and dream language all playing strong roles. With themes like rallying baby bees for the swarm, the artist positions himself as the Queen, ready to move through chaos, come what may.

“Ram Dass famously stated that all life experience, trauma, transcendence, joy, suffering, is all just “grist for the mill of awakening”. That being said, here is the GRIST.”

GRIST stands as a beat-heavy, noise heavy riot crackling through the heart of the city, while also a testament to life, survival from nothing, a celebration, and statement for those abused or undermined, yet who posess an inner power that none can reach.

“This is a pure offering to my baby bees, my ones who know code red, my cubs who climb the mount, my bears who hold their post, my hyenas who crawl under dark of dark. Following the critical success of 2024’s “Veil Lifter“, a doom metal/grunge album that achieved features on Doom Charts, Metal Devastation Radio and recognition from several ‘Best of 2024’ year end lists, Stephen Moore decided on a fresh direction for the next release. It ended up taking form far sooner than he has anticipated.

“VENUS IN FURS” is an appropriately subversive interpretation of Velvet Underground’s dirge classic. “WHEN THE WORLD IS BURNING BRIGHT” is a taunting 3 am gothic post-punk piece that lyrically confounds. There are no rules in Moore’s musical world. “FAST APPROACHING RADIANT LIGHT” once again jolts the pace along with a frantic breakbeat and an explosive, rousing performance. “SOMETHING STIRS”, also recorded in May 2025, is a song of mourning, partially based on the children’s campfire story “Who Has My Golden Arm?”, and partially based on Moore having his kittens stolen in the middle of the night and whole family robbed by an ex. Yes, truth is often stranger and more twisted than fiction, and this album is an uncensored walk directly through intensive trauma. “WE FALL”, simple as it is, can be a downright upsetting listen, even for Moore. Anyone who has lost someone they felt were integral might relate to this devastating, and very short, track.

“HYPNOTIZER” riffs on Led Zeppelin’s love for Eastern melodies that intertwine with solid hooks while delivering a message about lack of media, social and emotional literacy. “RIVER MAN”, an earnest cover of Nick Drake’s subtle classic, is very much a happy accident. Imperfect, yes. Moore recorded this himself in his apartment in 2010 after discovering he loved Nick Drake’s level of sensitivity and knack for communicating dark things through surreal lyricism. This is one of those cases where the performance just works better than a studio take and stands alone as it is. It could be the centerpiece of this release. “FINAL DAYS” is full-on punk rock with a rockabilly insanity to it, imagining the end of the world in a slightly comedic way and honoring both Refused and Swing Kids with it’s vicious energy.

“Reckless Fever”, “Oversoul”, “Start This Over” and “Surrender” are moody acoustic tracks with a similarity in their sense of existential longing. Both were written after Moore discovered his love for all things Leonard Cohen.

“CRAWLING KING SNAKE”, recorded in May 2025, delivers an altogether unpredictable take on The Doors and their stellar version of John Lee Hooker’s classic blues expression. “HYPNOTIZER” riffs on Led Zeppelin’s love for Eastern melodies that intertwine with solid hooks while delivering a message about lack of media, social and emotional literacy.

“God’s Away On Business” is another of Moore’s favorite Tom Waits tracks, and is has a new groove, as it would be inappropriate to attempt to impersonate the man. Passion runs all of this process. “What’s He Building In There?” is newly recorded in 2025. It is one of Stephen’s all-time Tom Waits favorites, although there are many of them. This is the ultimate take of the nosy neighbor.

Post Death Soundtrack‘s 5th full-length album “IN ALL MY NIGHTMARES I AM ALONE” is an eclectic collection of bastard children, some who have survived far too long on a diet of scrap. Having grown up loving albums like Nirvana’s ‘Incesticide’ and the Smashing Pumpkins ‘Pisces Iscariot’, Stephen Moore has always had a love for b-sides, outtakes, covers, and raw new expressions. He merely asks himself ‘Is it good?’ Although this album has both brutish output and beautiful pieces, the themes are difficult to unpack. “TREMENS” was finalized when Stephen Moore was literally in the middle of the dreaded Delirium Tremens. There is a 15 % chance of death. He called emergency at the peak of the experience, and was told nobody would want to help him. Maybe just brave it and go back inside. So he and did just that. As of today, he is still around, and so is stigma surrounding addiction.

During the promotion of 2024’s acclaimed ‘Veil Lifter’, Moore discovered the bones of a forgotten album, most of which had been recorded between 2009 – 2011. Some are on the experimental industrial and noise side of the sonic realm, while many are acoustic-based, a few of which were almost too pretty to be included. There are also new expressions that make up half of the album, both originals and covers alike.

“The concept behind the Hyena is many-fold. I grew up in a school that operated as ‘Lord of the Flies’. Bullying, intimidation, fear, and no safety. There was no escape or control. I don’t want to see that happen to others like my nephews or niece. I initially invoked the Hyena symbol in my lyrics after a nasty divorce that found my life savings gone and my kittens stolen. The invocation “I’ll be the Hyena. Unwelcome drifter.” came about. It is a willingness to rise up in the midst of total chaos. It is also a sacred connector between all of us who have faced trauma, abuse, gaslighting, or suicidal thoughts, saying “I’m with you. You’re not alone because we are the same and we share a pack.” – Steve Moore

Currently trending on the Bandcamp Grunge, Hard Rock, and Heavy Metal charts, Post Death Soundtrack’s “Veil Lifter” is getting heavy recognition. Steve: “Veil Lifter” is very much the album I’ve always wanted to make. The album is intended, as all my work is, to be completely uncensored, unashamedly dark, raw emotionally, and therefore, cathartic and freeing. It was literally written from deep within the shadow during nearly impossible times. Isolation, depression, addiction, chaos, burned bridges, health failures, and strangely, perseverance and the resilience of the inner witness. So in many ways, it’s an invocation of protection and spiritual weaponry at a time when it was greatly needed.

Much of it is written in heavy metaphor and dream language, as I’ve always felt it’s more powerful to paint a picture rather than be overly direct. Ideas from Advaita, the Gita, Zen and philosopher’s like Krishnamurti find their way into the concepts and lyricism here and there, but for the most part, this is a purely raw album intended to evoke deeply personal emotion, as it was written from a truly dangerous place..

“Veil Lifter” is dedicated to the memory of my hero and wonderful Father, Ted George Moore, who I know would be proud of what we’ve created.

Jon: Steve had amassed a treasure trove of guitar parts that he would send me daily. A lot of slow dirges with some faster hardcore-inspired stuff mixed in. That inspired the new direction for this record. We knew it was going to be a pretty big change ditching all the electronic production stuff we had done on our other records but when you listen to a song like ‘Bridge Burner’ off of the last album, you can see the direction we were heading.  
The bones of the songs came together very quickly, arranging all the drums, rhythm guitars and some of the bass in two crazy week-long bursts. The album really came to life once we started adding Steve’s great vocal layers, added some fuzzy melodic bass lines to move the plot along, and the icing on the cake was bringing in Casey Lewis. He had worked with Steve on several projects before and his intensity, personality, and feel make the record really punch.

About visceral tracks like “Lowdown Animal”, Moore adds” “The hyena has become a kind of symbol for the band, With lions, tigers, and bears, you have a good idea of what to expect from their brute strength. But hyenas represent the outsider, the unwelcome drifter, the cursed sneak. We’ll sneak up, surround the mighty lion and take it down while laughing.”

Veil Lifter will be released on digital platforms on April16th. A limited edition vinyl run is also expected at a slightly later date.

While listening to the album you can find many inspirations and influences such as Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Opeth, Tool, Windhand, The Stooges, Russian Circles, Mastodon, and Queens of the Stone Age, among many others. Along with their incredible songwriting and production, I loved how they were keen on the melodic output. In my opinion, this is a very smart step in their mix, why? Well, to keep the listener attached and focused on the themes and the music. Especially, they are adding various musical elements to each track. Steve Moore commented on the album as a raw, uncensored work reflecting his experiences with isolation, depression, addiction, and resilience. It draws on metaphorical and dream-like language to convey personal emotions and incorporates influences from Advaita, the Gita, Zen, and Krishnamurti. The album serves as a form of spiritual protection during challenging times and is dedicated to Steve’s father, Ted George Moore.

In addition, I would like to highlight the album lineup especially the drumming style of Casey Lewis which was recorded at Echo Base Studio. Seriously, I loved how Casey was keen on keeping the raw/old-school style in the spirit but presented it in a modern style. Impress, isn’t it? Defenilty, the album engineering by Jon Ireson, and back again to Casey for the mix and master created an iconic output. In my view, Jon and Steve collaborated on a new music direction inspired by guitar parts, resulting in a shift from electronic production. “The album’s foundation was quickly laid with drums, rhythm guitars, and bass, later enhanced by vocal layers and melodic bass lines. Casey Lewis’s contribution added intensity. The song “Lowdown Animal” symbolizes the band’s outsider spirit, likening them to hyenas taking down lions with cunning.” – Jon Ireson.

First, let me introduce to PSD; they define themselves as an electronic pop/rock band, formed in Calgary back in 2007. They released one album back in 2008 Music as Weaponry and a few singles throughout the years, until 2016, which brings this album The Unlearning Curve; which is a pretty interesting name if you ask me.

The album contains 9 tracks – which you can listen to through Soundcloud – and the genre kind of goes along electronic ~ experimental ~ indie. They weren’t bound to one thing, which I personally found intriguing. Starts with ‘That Which Is’ and I have no idea that which is what? This track is one of the weirdest tracks I think I’ve ever heard. Towards the end of the track, there are layered vocals and you can’t but ask “What. On Earth. Was that?” Thing is, you really can’t stop listening, and that what defines a good artist.

‘You Can’t Go Back’ is another interesting track, one of my favorites throughout the album if you ask. Next couple of tracks goes back and forth between electronic and indie or a mix of both. They are just really mellow and kind of soothing really.

Then comes ‘Little Alice’. What? I had to listen to it a few times before actually knowing what to write about it. It starts with some narration, and I’m guessing it’s based on the famous fantasy novel Alice in Wonderland even the video – found below the article – is loosely based on it, it even has some footage from the 1951 Disney version. The track almost has no singing at all, just narrating, almost halfway through has some singing. It even gets heavier towards the end.

The final 3 tracks of the album, including ‘Through the Gates’ are personal favorite of mine. The tracks get softer, with low pitch vocals. ‘Through the Gates’ is almost all keyboard and piano and it was extremely soothing.

PSD is a very interesting band if you’re into their genre. They are definitely worth listening to. I personally went back to check all their previous stuff, but The Unlearning Curve just topped all of their previous work.
