Pop/Rock Trio, Royal Castles, Unveil the Full Lineup from their ‘Singles Night’ EP

Energetic, hard hitting and hooks for days, Royal Castles make nostalgic but contemporary garage-power-pop. Hailing from Guelph, Ontario, the three-piece blend riffy guitar licks, wooly bass and ear-candified harmonies. They have partnered again with Zane Whitfield (The Glorious Sons, The Blue Stones, Luella) who produced their sophomore album, Just The Hits (2021), on five new songs for their EP called Singles Night.

“I Don’t Think I Like You” is their summer vibe song. It’s the focus track from Singles Night. Put it on and go for a long drive!

“There was a friend who had been around for years; someone we all thought we liked, because we were supposed to like him,” songwriter Jordan Gabriel explains. “He was a part of the crew. But as time went on, that little nagging feeling became clearer and clearer. We just didn’t like him.”

In the era of streaming where every song is its own piece of content, the idea was to release each of the five tracks as singles. So why not call it out in the name? Lyrically, these songs mark a shift towards storytelling and allegory. Royal Castles have also upped the production level to craft poppier, catchier tunes.

“Our fascination with pop has continued to influence us lyrically, thematically and from a crafted production standpoint,” says Jordan Gabriel. “We are chasing the elusive earworm. And we simply want to bring our audiences a little bit of head-bobbing happiness.”

Hailing from Guelph, ON, Royal Castles are Katrin Sawatzky, Jordan Gabriel and AJ Johnson. Together they blend riffy guitar licks, wooly bass and ear-candified harmonies to create their own sound of nostalgic but contemporary garage-power-pop. The band’s sophomore album, Just The Hits, was released in 2021 and recorded at North Of Princess Studio with producer Zane Whitfield (Glorious Sons, Blue Stones).

Royal Castles have partnered again with Whitfield and are in the midst of releasing five new songs towards an EP entitled Singles Night, set for release on April 19th. “Stage Fright” can be paralyzing if you let it, but it can also act as a fuel to make you push past something that scares you. That’s what the third release ahead of Singles Night is about – fearing something or someone and pushing past to harness that nervous energy.

Royal Castles are entering their third album cycle to continue this momentum with their upcoming EP, Singles Night, showcasing their sonic evolution and featuring the brand new single, “Bad Business Barbie.” Spotlighting drummer Katrin Sawatzky‘s vocals and songwriting in a fresh new moment for Royal Castles, “Bad Business Barbie” is a bold love letter to the women who are tamed by patriarchy, a rally cry, a confession about vulnerability, power, freedom and the secrets we keep.

“Bad Business Barbie” was recorded at North of Princess Studio (Glorious Sons, Blue Stones) in Kingston, Ontario with producer, Zane Whitfield. It was workshopped in the studio with a very collaborative approach, building on a heavy groove, sultry vocals and brooding energy.
