This is exactly what Sam Feinstein‘s latest single is all about…it’s called “Need Me” and it’s absolutely brilliant for that alone, if not for the great arrangement, theatrical and multi-faceted vocal performance, and excellent sound design…well, basically it’s a no brainer, a highly enjoyable musical and lyrical ride through the world of alternative rock.

Unique sounds, vocal effects, soundscapes, and excellent melodies make the backdrop to Sam’s unique storytelling lyrics…there are parts where he starts to take on several personas…it’s brilliant, just brilliant.

You’ll hear that the bass line is super melodic, catchy, and weaves perfectly, steering the composition into many artistic directions…and let me tell you an insight here…Sam is a bassist originally…and he really makes that bass sing.

Sam Feinstein is a San Jose-based bassist who rolls with a few bands in that area, chief among them is The Monitors, who play ‘Maslow’s Mountain’ and ‘Hamster Wheel’, Feinstein’s latest single, as part of their live sets. Naming Tom Waits as his first influence made so much sense to me -it certainly made pieces fall into place, and it would be the same way for anybody who checks out Feinstein’s songs and find themselves taken aback by the corroded, gritty, and abrasive industrial edge to the man’s voice, which he is unashamedly putting in the forefront of the funk-ridden arrangement.

It takes courage for a singer to realize that the weirdness of their voice can be their primary selling points, and Feinstein has loads of courage. ‘Maslow’s Mountain’ has a purplish, hazy playground of a mix, with the melodic chord sequences pit against sharp jazzy pangs of dissonance, themselves pit against jumpy and psych-funk inspired synths and wah-wah heavy guitars -a quirky mix to put it mildly, a terrific one to put it properly.

Sam Feinstein is not here to sell us a mere oddity. Not at all. Indeed, the man knows how to write a fantastically tight song, and his quirks only heightens all of the musical choices he’s making. I bet the landscape in Feinstein’s head has some truly novel colors. 

Sam does his solo work while also being a singer and bassist in a synth-pop band, The Monitors…so the artist is always working on the next great thing…also, a bit of trivia, The Monitors will be performing with Sam with the live shows and will also feature on his future releases…they do have a lot of sync between them, don’t miss out checking The Monitors.

You could say that “Hamster Wheel” is a kind of tribute from Sam to his band, as they have been on hiatus since the loss of one of the founding members, Sam Foreman…but they are at it again, once more, not giving up and actually…it could all be for their dear friend.

Sam describes “Hamster Wheel” as ‘for people who feel stuck in their jobs, media portrays a luxury, aspirational lifestyle as the norm, and most people, especially younger generations, just can’t live up to it, so this song gives voice to their frustrations’…

…a very insightful look at the way we live, more akin to a social commentary…but through great beats, energy, movement, and catchy vocal melodies…

“Hamster Wheel” is a fun, insightful, and entertaining fusion of synth-pop-rock mixed with a deep and thoughtful approach and a thought-provoking topic that will have people thinking… and feel relatable.
