A Melbourne, Australia based musical outfit, Satellite Train is an indie rock collective composed of collaborators from such iconic acts as Icehouse and AC/DC, Paul Kelly, and The Black Sorrows, alongside American Collaborators as well. The collective’s latest concoction is a sweet and momentous piece of powerful indie rock that features fresh-faced chord sequences and some soulful vocal yells. 

‘Paralyzed’ is a song that -contrary to its title- is in a constant state of motion. Thanks to its involved drum part that’s manic and powerful, the song features a consistently moving groove that is further supported by the gentle gallop of its bass line. The chords and the spacious synth pad atmospherics only serve to amplify the song’s forward push. The fantastic production on this cut makes it sound just beautiful. The powerful vocals take the centerstage, supported from the back by the powerful rhythm section, guitars on the side delivering power chord riffs here and melodic phrases there, and the airy synths establish wide space from the back of the mix. A beautiful balance.

Satellite Train’s ‘Paralyzed’ is a driving song with an infectious groove and beautifully crafted melodies. A song that got us excited for the outfit’s plans for the rest of the year.

Initially, I want to showcase this talented group and its members: Michael Paynter (Icehouse), John (Watto) Watson (James Reyne), John McCall (previously with The Black Sorrows), Shane O’Mara and Randy Jacobs (previously with Paul Kelly), Jamie Muhoberac (John Mayer), and the Melbourne duo Susan Turner & Pasquale Monea. The diverse musical influences from Australia and the United States have contributed to unique qualities seldom found in contemporary acts.

The dynamic, powerful, and emotive singing style of Michael immediately captivated me within the first 30 seconds, drawing my full attention to the track. Everyone knows that the initial minute of a new song determines whether you will keep listening or not. I admired the tight musical arrangement and the fantastic chemistry among the band members, which is to be expected from such seasoned musicians. The exceptional mix highlighted the beauty of each instrument. “Cry” is a story of a young kid that’s suffering from loneliness due to the absence of her parents…a huge hole that is not easily filled, if ever…the song also sends the message that we have to have the resilience and strength within us to go out and find joy even during the hardest of times…

…a bit of a ‘spoiler alert’ is coming up…”Cry” is just one word in the verse which actually says “Don’t Cry”…and that is the plot twist of the song…which is brilliant!

Satellite Train is making some kind of a storytelling milestone in music history…they are telling actually engaging musical stories that have a plot twist that flips your way of thinking and makes you revisit the way you think about stuff in life…

“Cry” starts with a very powerful 80s rock intro kind of vibe…instantly hooking audiences…powerful drums fills, huge guitar riffs, and unusual composition…check, check, and…check. Brilliant.

The music takes an excellent alt-country/rock path with muted guitar riffs, consistent and powerful drum beats, with the lead vocals soaring high and with an excellent range too. The backing vocals too are top-notch, making the anthemic force strong with this one.

The composition and instrumentation are top-notch, powerful at times, and super chill at others…this kind of dynamics in a song really elevates the experience and hooks audiences instantly…we know, we got hooked.

…what really differentiates this song is not just the great musicality it offers, but the message…a message that would translate perfectly to any person in the world, no matter what background, culture or language they speak, it unifies people, focusing on what lies within our souls as human beings.

Satellite Train opened Shameless with lite catchy guitars and smooth chill vocals, setting the song’s mood right from the beginning. They started progressing with a more open sound and bright melodies, expanding their boundaries without losing the mood they’d set. Those guys successfully created a mellow streaming flow with an unmistakable groove, all in a solid multi-layered structure that keeps the listener hooked and entertained. The vocal melody, dreamy guitars, groovy bass, and jazzy enjoyable drumming are all tightly bonded together in perfect harmony and smooth flow, pushing the song’s interesting dynamics forward towards a beautifully catchy mood with an extremely organic and authentic warm sound.

Satellite Train wisely used everything they have creating Shameless, cleverly using every element in an arrangement that shows their sense of melody, vision, and top-notch writing skills, hitting deeply emotional spots with their touching sound. The names and the bands they play with are already eye-openers on their own, so let’s see how this new single holds up. 

The song begins with soft and high vocals that set the mood for what’s about to come. The guitars play an awesome chord progression that takes us back to basics with its mix of vibes between 60s Rock and modern Pop-Rock. The drum line is wonderful and well-thought throughout the track, and so are the added percussion sounds. The keyboards are well balanced between being percussive and melodic, which is something you don’t hear often in this type of song. The way the basslines and guitar lines are easy to vibe with and the catchiness of the chorus make me sire this one will become a hit, once it gets more radio and platform streams for sure. Last but not least, the high-pitched and playful vocals here are the star of the show. I loved the intonation, the clarity, the pitch stability, and how there is a smooth balance between head and chest voice throughout the song that makes it feel like an easy-to-sing vocal line (which is not true at all). At the end of the day, what started as a collaborative side project of some friends ended up having a flavor and a personality of its own and this material pretty much deserves to be taken on tour and played for live audiences, in my non-humble and biased opinion.

Everything about the song demonstrates these artists’ polished musicianship. The clean bass line, the crispy riffs, and the straightforward drumming all work together in harmony to give a compulsive earworm, but the standout ingredient is the melodic vocal line that offers a timeless performance.

I doubt you’d need a second lesson to become a fan; the band’s charisma will wash over you immediately. However, you can have another atmospheric listening experience with the acoustic version; it carries a dreamy, serene vibe, and regardless of the wistful lyrical content, it’s subtle enough for a dance!
