The Kyle Jordan Project’s latest single ‘Mexico’ sounds like a landmark piece of music that’s sublimely balanced and with a cohesive, distinctive approach that’s taken to its very end, resulting in a song that’s absolutely gorgeous and unique.

A Canadian project based in Victoria, British Colombia, The Kyle Jordan Project is spearheaded by Kyle Jordan, a multi-talented musical visionary who assumes many roles. His journey from playing drums at his church in rural Canada to the vibrant musical scene in Victoria and the plethora of collaborations he hosted and was hosted on is a testament to his solid set of skills and his ability to blend the traditional with the innovative, a point that is poignantly explored on ‘Mexico’

A decidedly skeletal piece of music, ‘Mexico’ is slithering with a litany of immediately emotive melodies, wrapping around a fantastic rhythm section. The punchy and dry drums are complemented by the bassline; a melodic and intricate part that carries the brunt of the song’s harmonic structure in the absence of keyboards or traditional, chord-playing rhythm guitar. Having the bassline carry the chords through its melody gives the song its distinctive, Latin American feel that is further heightened by the blaring horns filling the background. The last piece of the puzzle is unquestionably the delightful vocals, shifting from minimal broods on the verses, to passionate cries on the chorus, surrounded by oohs in aahs in harmony, creating a visceral sense of atmosphere whenever they come on.

‘Mexico’ is a beautifully arranged piece of music from a musical mastermind. Distinctive and quite vivid, a song that is a testament to Kyle Jordan’s piercing musical vision.
