A few weeks ago, we gave you a review for ‘Ragnarok: The Fall of Edin’– read it here – this time we’re giving you a review for ‘The Legend of Beowulf’. This is the 4th released track by the Egyptian Viking/Folk Death Metal band Thorvald from their first full-length album, Blood Eagle. Thorvald recently developed their musical atmosphere with using clean vocals. The band was formed in 2013 in Alexandria and its members are Ahmad Mostafa(Composition, Guitars, Lyrics and Bass), Rami Muhammed (Guitars, Drums and Programming), Saif El Shazly (Vocals and Lyrics), and Omar El Wallie (Guitars). ‘The Legend of Beowulf’ features Thorvald‘s new Guitarist, Omar Wallie.

Evidently, this piece is a unique one because it is taken from the Anglo-Saxon legacy. If you are interested in English Literature, you know well what Beowulf is, but if you don’t know, it is the first epic in English Literature.

Let’s move to the track.
The track starts with heavy tunes and the style of the track is close to Thorvald‘s previous track ‘Rangarok: The Fall of Oudin’. You can taste the epic/poetic atmosphere in the tunes of the guitars and the beats of the drums. In 1:22, the riffs turn to be deeper and harder. Clean vocals techniques are the main tool for Thorvald‘s version of Beowulf. The variety of pitches, the open spaces of vocals are well employed through the track. Lately, the scene contains a few good clean vocals so a new and good clean vocalist now joins the scene, and that is Saif El Shazly. Thorvald still employs the instrumental melodic parts to move from phase to phase through the track. The solo in 4:11 to 4:58 is well-executed, it is really attractive and deep. The only problem is the matter of sound quality. In some parts of the track, the sounds of the guitar are higher than the vocals and in other parts the vocals are too loud and they are close to noise. Regarding the solo part, the sounds of the guitars are very high.

Rate: 8.5/10.

Last week, Thorvald released a new track from their First album Blood Eagle. The band recently has announced through their Facebook page that they will change their music style from Viking Death Metal to Heavy/Power Metal without changing their Viking Taste after the joining of its new vocalist Seif.

Let’s get starting on this track! I enjoyed the way it started; the powerful melodic tunes of guitars steals the attraction of your ears to listen to the story; the instrumental intro is about 45 seconds. The riffs are highly organized as pages of a long legend from the Vikings land. The instrumental parts between the verses are as interludes between each stage from the plot. The performance of Thorvald‘s new guitarist Seif is excellent, he controls his vocals in a good way as he gives the impression that he controls the whole riffs, moreover, he narrates the story with different cleans.

From 4:28, there is a duel between the guitars and clear bass lines. An effective instrumental interlude shapes the legend with melodies not just words. Do you know what we call this? We call it the Climax. The melodies move from calm to harshness, especially the drums till the fall which is reflected with 1 second of silence. Next thing you know, the riffs are as powerful as they started in the beginning of the track with a scream. It is also worth mentioning that the lyrics are perfectly written. Final note about the track is the quality: the quality of the track is good, however I believe that the vocals are sometimes too high and the parts which contain more than one voice needed to be more accurate.

To sum up the review, more Heavy Metal with Viking Style is on its way to the Egyptian music scene. Thorvald manages to give the scene the blessings of Amon Amarth! Let me tell ya, I was worried after hearing the news of Thorvald changing their genre but they managed to deliver on the spot. I’d definitely give them 9.5/10.

A Viking/Death Metal band from Egypt? That’s definitely something different, new and interesting in our scene. Thorvald was formed in 2013 and takes from the Vikings Mythology essence to create their music. The band faced a lot of questioning about their lyrical theme and their music style. They are currently preparing for their first EP release and they released two tracks already. Check our review about their second single ‘Nordic March’.

One word will sum up all the talking; they are highly influenced by Amon Amarth. Even the lyrics talked about the traditional topics of Amon Amarth “Wars and fights to conquer more lands.” If you are a fan of Amon Amarth you will distinguish that easily.

The music also was deeply influenced by Amon Amarth. Their music took me to the land of the Vikings with their strength, wars, fights and gods with ‘Nordic March’ powerful and strong tunes, catchy melodies and attractive solo. The vocals were incredible! They were like the actual screams of Viking warriors. All the lines of the track were highly organized and all the lines were put accurately together. The volume of each was excellent, no line louder than the other or faster, all served in one harmony. I loved the way, which the solo was represented; the melodies of the guitar break them all and force them to take a calm direction. The guitar proudly roared, “I am the king here.”

A final note about the vocals, though, Amr Hossam’s performance with Thorvald hundred times better than his performance with Excimer. This track is definitely a 9 out of 10.

Although Thorvald is still considered as a new band in the scene, it has great expectations with positive feedback from the listeners. They are beginners but they are beginning well. Will we have the Egyptian Amon Amarth and Viking Mythology spread more into our scene? Listen to ‘Nordic March’ and let us know what you think in the comments below.
