Based in Zurich, Switzerland, Urban Walrus is masterminded by Fabian Korber, a singer and songwriter and a self-proclaimed indie-garbage-rock-poet who just emerged from a 6-month long tour of New York, Amsterdam, and Zurich, finding enough time just to hit the studio to record his latest single.

The song is a moderate-tempo alternative rock that has cues similar to the music of No Doubt or REM. The 90s influence shows up in the very tangible and emotionally rich melody and the seamless blend of electrified rock atmospheres with gentle acoustic guitar strums. The results are a nostalgic sound, an earworm of a hook, an anthemic feel, and a massive replay potential.

Fabian Korber’s Urban Walrus provides music that’s generally very easy to enjoy. From his witty lyrics and smart arrangement choices, ‘Not Today’ is an active song that’s dynamic and with a deep groove, punchy production, and an easy-going composition.

Urban Walrus is the alter ego of Swiss/German singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Fabian Koerber. The project was established in 2022, and three singles were released, hitting half a million streams on Spotify alone.

“All I Really Want” sounds at first like it has a nihilism theme where a person has had enough of the big ifs in the universe and doesn’t care about a thing anymore, only to turn out to be enfolding around adoration through the poignant vocal performance, tender melody, and affectionate lyricism.

Gentle guitar playing opens the song, which builds a positive atmosphere right from the start. Once the warm, melodic vocals enter, it doesn’t matter what the theme is because it will offer a good vibe anyway. The relaxing musicality helps with fantasizing about being at the beach, with a starry sky and perfect blue waves illustrating the background, because the main view is the one you love sitting next to you.

Urban Walrus is a relatively new band formed in January of 2021 by Fabian Koerber, a multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter with three singles now released on the band’s Spotify page, and a couple more on SoundCloud. 

The song August Rain, written and performed by Fabian Koerber takes inspiration from classic rock, and perhaps the title itself is a reference to another well known song by a very famous classic rock band. The guitars are mellow, the drums are slow but punchy, and the bass lays down a groovy, essentialist line to tie them together. 

Guitars begin to crunch up with distortion and rock organs come in just before the chorus, getting you ready for the full blown smooth distortion riffs and emotional vocal performance with a catchy melody in one hell of a throwback chorus!

The piano in the chorus adds a magnificent layer of tasteful emotion in the chorus, followed by a post chorus that almost explodes with energy, which ends on calm release for all the tension it builds up into a guitar solo.

The second verse is just like the first verse, except bigger and better, with more layers, new instruments, and more energy! Incredible work and attention to detail really went into the arrangement of this track.

Urban Walrus may call themselves “probably the most boring band in the world,” due to their low profile when it comes to their social media presence, but I honestly think that they have quite an interesting project going on here, and it’s definitely worth encouraging them to be a little more proactive on social media, because this is music that deserves to be heard.
