Their uplifting new EP, Broken Chairs, was mostly written in the week songwriter Michael Wynn was laid off from his full time job. Some of these melodies came straight from his dreams, and together with producer Nixon Boyd (Hollerado, Dizzy), they put together this rocking, five track EP. 

“Be Still My Heart” is about someone talking to their soul or heart, and getting them to try to calm down or take stock of where they are in life. In some ways the narrator has not been true to themselves, i.e. the separation from their heart and what makes them human. Wynn envisioned the narrator as someone who once deemed making money as their primary focus and had lost sight of the important things. Making money may have been the most important thing in this narrator’s life in “Be Still My Heart,” but they soon realize that money means nothing when you are no longer around.

Vicky von Vicky is a Toronto indie rock band that originated in the late 1990s, featuring Michael Wynn (Melted Wings) on guitar and vocals, Rolston Miller on bass, and Tom Nesbitt (The Others) on guitar. Vicky von Vicky‘s distinctive sound draws inspiration from punk, grunge, classic rock, and rock, soul and hip-hop. However, their music is not a genre mash-up. They delve into themes of love, loss, and life experiences, expressing themselves with candidness, vulnerability and a big serving of humour. The result is Vicky von Vicky‘s music.

This culminates in their five-track EP, Broken Chairs, slated for release on June 14th. In anticipation, they share the alt rock single “Freak Me Out” which follows a person through a traumatic event as they begin to feel the effects of it.

“After the recent solar eclipse, I experienced that weird feeling just before you are encompassed in darkness (totality). It was very eerie, the lighting and everything just seemed a bit ‘off.’ Although this song was written well before that experience, that’s pretty close to the feeling the primary figure is singing about in this song.” – vocalist and guitarist Michael Wynn

Indie rock band Vicky von Vicky from Toronto, Ontario features Michael Wynn on guitar and vocals, Rolston Miller on bass, and Tom Nesbitt on guitar. Originating in the late 1990s, the band was formed by former members of Trains of Winter (Kingston, ON), along with Paul Pasanen on drums and Wynn’s brother Chris Wynn (guitar) who was replaced by Nesbitt (previously part of London, ON’s The Others). Within the local Toronto music scene, Vicky von Vickyquickly established themselves as an act to watch in their early years.

Following the release of two albums in 1998 (self-titled) and 2000 (Farmers & Artists), the band took a hiatus in 2001. In 2019, the band reunited, paying tribute to a friend and former band member. This “second chance” allowed Vicky von Vicky to regroup and make a triumphant return to the Toronto music scene. With a renewed focus, they are eager to unveil fresh new music and forge connections with people who like listening to something just a little different.

Their single “Goodbye My Love” is from the perspective of two ex-lovers and references lyrics from the R.E.M. song “It’s The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine).” Working together with producer Nixon Boyd (Hollerado, Dizzy, Deanna Petcoff), they recall a 1950’s style with a modern indie feel, by incorporating some unexpected but exciting “doo-wop” vocals to the song.

Originating in the late 1990s, the band took a hiatus in 2001. Now, after almost two decades, Vicky von Vicky has regrouped with a renewed focus on songwriting and collaboration. They delve into themes of love, loss, and life experiences, expressing themselves with candidness, vulnerability and a big serving of humour.

Their latest single “Not The Man” tells a tale of introspection as the narrator questions one’s legacy in life and to those around them. Touching on self-doubt, loneliness, and aging, “Not The Man” reaffirms the mantra to live now (while you still can).

On “Jealousy,” they deliver a body-moving jangly track that was written from the perspective that the end of a relationship is not the end of you. “I hope that this song can serve as a source of empowerment for those who may be going through a tough breakup, and remind them that they are not alone and that brighter days are ahead.” – Michael Wynn (Vox/Guitar)
