The Canadian pop duo Wotts surprises us with their latest track, “There,” with a new kind of songwriting. As they put it, “We have a habit of making sad happy songs, so we thought it would be funny to flip it and make a happy sad song for once.”

“There” is an intimate song that expresses unconditional love; however, if you’re not an English speaker or didn’t pay attention to the lyrics, you may think it’s a breakup or a depressive song. That’s the beauty of it, to be honest!

The soothing, silky vocals, combined with the dramatic touch, make the trick more believable. The performance can hypnotize you into feeling blue. The minimal musical composition plays its part well too. The song has “The Beatles” influence, which makes it endearing. The piano-driving melody offers such a relaxing state. The warm strings added by a professional violinist are a genuine touch that helps create a dreamy aura.

The Wotts are pushing their boundaries here and offering a truly creative track. It’s heartwarming or heartbreaking. Your call!

The indie pop darling duo from Ottawa are old enough to be well established, fresh enough to be impressive in their reach and ambition. ‘PETALS’ is a strange song, with its intricate, moving bassline providing most of the song’s tangible melodies, and also magically keeping time and providing rhythm, while the guitars are busy jangling away with their distortion and washed-out reverb, and the drums are also busy being extremely mad, there’s nothing not incredibly sweet about ‘PETALS’. 

The vocals are also what we’ve come to expect from the duo, full of swagger and swing, and the words are needlessly deep. This song could have gone for simple, second-hand words, but since this is Wotts, we have syncopated wizardry, metaphors, and heavy-hitting lines. With ‘PETALS’, the duo are once again proving themselves to be capable songwriters and producers. Moreover, the duo are also proving that they are bold enough to take risks and to make their songs as weird as they want them to be. Wotts are not holding back.

The duo is based in Ottawa, Canada…and they are Jayem (vocalist/multi-instrumentalist) and Ricky (bassist/guitarist)…and they are returning to their synth pop origins with “ALLO!”…which marks a very charismatic and melodic musical presence in the music scene

“ALLO!” captures all senses from the very first seconds of its playtime.

The synth melodies pulled us in instantly to the synth pop world, that also has some groovy dancy bits here and there…

The groovy bass is a staple of the movement that “ALLO!” induces in the systems of the audiences…us being part of that!

“ALLO!” has dancy parts, energetic parts, then has a very ambient bridge where the guitar shines and bursts into the solo…and another ambient bridge that mixes things up only to kick up the energy to level 100 once again…

The musical structure of “ALLO!” is a very entertaining one, one that keeps you hooked from start to finish, only to have you play it back once again, especially with its concise runtime of 3 minutes…it’s the kind of song you’d keep on repeat for some time.

The vocal elements contain movements, ambience, rhythm, it’s more like an instrument than standard vocals that you’d find anywhere else.

We wish all the best to Wotts with their upcoming EP “Petals”…if “ALLO!” was just a taste of what to come…then we’re ready for the feast.

The song drops on the 26th of this month…so in a couple of days, keep your eyes and ears peeled out for the awesome Wotts.

 First thing that hits on ‘be kind’ is the supersonic synth lead line that continues with the duo’s trademark of using unconventional synth sound to infuse their tracks with an unusual energy that usually sets them apart from similar indie bands. The first single since their latest 3-song release earlier in June, ‘be kind’ continues to show that Wotts’ knack for creating an immersive indie pop tune is a reliable source of good music. Produced by Jayem, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and one half of Wotts along with bassist and guitarist Ricky 100, the return to the in-house production sees the gradual improvement of Wotts’ sound continuing, with a dancing bassline and punchy drums, mixed to perfection. The lyrics continue to be witty, if the general direction is starting to be more mature and serious in nature. ‘be kind’ is, in the words of the duo, a farewell to the people we never got the chance to get closure with.

‘be kind’ is a stunning song that might actually stun you. The guitars and plucky synths are indeed very bright, which made me feel a little discomfort after a couple of listens. Nothing to fault the song though, as if you intend to consume the song like a normal person, listening to it once or twice in the middle of your playlist, and not listen to it ten times in a row for analyzation purposes, then ‘be kind’ is a genuinely uplifting song, particularly because of its trebly, cheerful sound, even if the topic discussed is thought provoking.     

Wotts are based in Ottawa…and from there they are sharing their latest single “garden” to create a very relaxing and I would even go to say a ‘healthy’ experience through their latest song.

“garden” is an indie pop song with some indie rock elements thrown in the mix…and every little details crafted in the song is put there for a reason…and all the reasons are aiming for the same goal, to give a musical indie pop mood with some dreamy soundscapes that will help you have a better day for sure.

“garden” sounds rich while not being overpowering at all…the overall sound is very well balanced, the harmonies are dreamy, the vocals are dreamy yet charismatic…and the guitar works, even though I wanted more, but it is so perfectly put within the mix that you want more yet you still know that ‘less is more’…and Wotts really captured the essence of this saying…they really balanced the whole song perfectly.

The vocal melodies are catchy to the extent that you’ll find yourself singing along during the first verse, the first time you hear it.

The beat section and percussive elements are groovy while still being balanced and does not overpower any other element…

…the guitar solo is short but extremely sweet…

“garden” sounds relaxed and laid back…something we surely miss in these times especially.

A very welcome song to the world indeed, a highly recommended listen to those you like to kick back and chill.

Wishing Wotts all the best in both their professional and personal careers, they surely deserve it.

This time around, the track begins with modern-sounding lo-fi vocals and a mellow guitar chord progression. The sound feels inspired by the 80s but more akin to today’s power-pop and Indie styles. The vocals are low-pitched and grounded for the verses, and they go higher as we reach the chorus. The bassline is present and efficient in a great way that serves the song’s emotional delivery and is accompanied by a synth/key refrain at the end of every 2 bars…denoting they didn’t leave all the 80s influence behind.

The drums sound a little bit electronic/synthetic but that’s what makes the track charmingly modern and super fresh to both the 2023 mainstream music lover and the 80s nostalgia lover. 

The cherry on top for me was the guitar solo near the end of the track, followed by one more chorus which beautifully closes the song…and spoken word outro that’s a little bit muffled and carries a hidden message. At the end of the day, I enjoyed the “best of both worlds” vibe that this song brought so much…if you wanted the 80s done in a 2023 style then this is definitely the way it should be done.

“Wotts” had a couple of tracks previously reviewed in Rock Era Magazine titled “Six-Shooter” & “SOMETHING” and frankly all of the tracks caught my ears for a listen.

“Wheel” begins with a palm-muted acoustic guitar riff, followed by a calm pop upbeat surrounded by synths and melodic dopamine tunes engulfing the emotions in you.

“Wotts” wrote “Wheel” in a way that sounds a lot like the tracks that we watch on MTV, that it smells like some kind of a teen nostalgic vibe, probably for the use of xylophone sound that brought kindness and calm along. Also, the band’s main Influences are DJo and Dayglow and their main signature is to combine retro and contemporary music altogether and stick to the ‘80s vibe.

“Wheel” is about letting go of life’s conflicts, and believing in the absolute facts, in other words ‘mortality’ as the band stated. 

The vocal keys sung by “Wotts” are sung perfectly and using soft vocal tones along with the magnificence of instrumentals that are used at the exact right time casting the adequate vibe to the listener.

To give an emotional, playful and nostalgic theme along with lowkey dancing rhythm beats is definitely a hard job to do, but I guess not that hard, when “Wotts” are the ones on the ‘Wheel’.

I remember last July, when my teammate, Sarah Elzanaty reviewed their track, ‘6 Shooter’ and how she was so amazed by the track, which made me curious to listen to it, and oh! She was totally right! They are hitting again this month, with another indie pop-rock tune, and I really loved their pop elements over rock beats and how this was giving a strength and tightness for the track. Well done! 

Do you know the English pop-rock band The 1975? Their distinguished lyrics and musical output is outstanding for sure. The Canadian duo, Wotts, got inspired by The 1975 music and was the one of the main factors to create that indie pop hit. While listening to ‘SOMETHING’ I noticed that it’s not only about pop, they were keen to include other musical styles into the production, “Indie Pop is our goal, but I think we’re having a lot of fun with exploring new sounds and really trying to build an atmosphere with our music.” – Wotts bassist and guitarist Ricky 100 said. This is why I felt there was a nice mix of rock, electronica, along with vintage pop vibes as well. In simple words, ‘SOMETHING’ is one of those tunes that fits anywhere and you will simply swing and dance and interact easily with the music. Feel the vibes below!
