Phoenix’s Sweet Mess released “Violate the Night” on March 24th, their second original single following “Midnight Knows My Name” which I covered earlier this year. Same session, same studio – the band knocked out three songs in a single all-day session at Mind’s Eye Studio with Larry Elyea engineering. The song leans into universal territory: sex, drugs, alcohol, rock and roll – the whole spectrum of ways a person can violate the night in their own way. Broad enough to be relatable, specific enough in Sylvie’s delivery to feel personal.

This song is catchier and has a straighter groove and is tighter, and the dynamics are better, and the pacing is better, which is an indication that the band is growing more comfortable with their sound. For a second original release from a band that spent years as a tribute act, that kind of growth between tracks is a good sign. The Halestorm and Pretty Reckless influences are audible without the song feeling derivative, and Sylvie’s vocals carry the same power as on the debut single but with more control over when to push and when to pull back.

Sweet Mess has been clear that their strongest material is still coming, and the trajectory between “Midnight Knows My Name” and “Violate the Night” makes that believable. Two originals in and they’re already tighter than most bands are a full EP deep. Worth watching where the next few releases land.
