Growing up is often sold as becoming a better version of yourself. In reality, it’s usually much messier. “The Death of Peter Pan” by Tarita finds its charm in that mess: the space between childhood imagination and the ordinary complications of adult life.

Written nearly two decades ago when Tarita was in her early twenties, the song now arrives with an unexpected second perspective. Its lyrics, written by longtime friend Rohan Tharyan, move from dragons, mermaids and pirate ships into jobs, relationships, family and wedding rings. “I rode a dragon, with silver scales…” immediately places us inside the limitless imagination of childhood, before the song gradually brings us back to the realities of growing older.

The release doesn’t treat this transition as either a tragedy or a triumph. There is nostalgia, but it isn’t overly sentimental. Instead, Tarita observes the strange absurdity of becoming an adult; how the fantastical worlds we once inhabited are gradually replaced by routines and responsibilities without necessarily disappearing completely.

The acoustic arrangement reinforces that understated quality. Gentle guitar provides the foundation, with Sanjai Shine adding guitar and backing vocals, while Mervin Thomas handles the mixing and mastering. Nothing feels unnecessarily overproduced. The space in the arrangement allows Tarita’s voice and the imagery in the lyrics to carry the emotional weight.

There is also a beautiful irony in the song’s own journey. A track about time passing spent almost twenty years waiting to be properly recorded and released. What began as a song from Tarita’s twenties has effectively grown alongside her, acquiring a different meaning simply through the passage of time.

That’s what makes “The Death of Peter Pan” by Tarita more than a song about losing childhood. It is about discovering that growing up doesn’t necessarily mean abandoning the person you were. Sometimes the dragons are still there. They’re just living somewhere underneath the deadlines, relationships and wedding rings..
