The internet has made judging strangers remarkably easy. “New Shoes” by ProgAtom looks at what happens when that distance becomes a barrier to empathy, turning online trolling, hateful commentary and public judgement into the subject of an energetic progressive-rock track.
Lying at the centre is a deceptively simple question: “I haven’t been in your shoes / So who am I to judge?” The lyrics move through mocking tweets, cruelty and public humiliation, capturing how quickly online hostility can escalate. “Creating walls / Let the bridges fall” becomes particularly fitting here; a reflection of how easily digital conversations can, in fact, create divisions rather than actual connections.
The track takes a more expansive route. ProgAtom blend progressive and jazz-rock influences with a fluid melodic flow, shifting textures and detailed instrumental interplay. There is plenty happening beneath the surface, but the arrangement never loses sight of the song’s central message.
The band’s musicianship is a major part of that experience. Keyboards, bass, drums and guitars interact continuously, with blues-tinged moments and unexpected hooks appearing throughout the progressive framework. Around the four-minute mark, guitarist Mattis Sørum takes the spotlight with an extended instrumental passage, giving the track room to expand before the full ensemble returns.
That contrast is what makes the song particularly effective. The music is layered and technically detailed, while the message remains direct: we rarely know enough about another person’s life to judge them with certainty. The progressive structure gives the idea space to breathe rather than turning it into a simple musical statement.
That is where “New Shoes” by ProgAtom finds its relevance. In a digital landscape where physical distance can make cruelty feel consequence-free, the song asks us to reconsider what sits between one person and another. Sometimes closing that space doesn’t require agreement; just enough empathy to remember there is another human being on the other side..
