Jimi Bennett and guitarist John Davis have been close friends for more than 35 years, so it fits that their new single was made somewhere that feels like home. “When Love Walks In” was recorded in Bennett’s own home studio in Atlanta and came out on October 17th, with Jean Carllos Lemes Miranda on keyboards and piano completing the Jimi Bennett Band. Bennett says working there gave them the freedom to experiment and pay attention to every detail.

The three bring long résumés, according to the band’s bio. Bennett, a singer, songwriter, and preacher, founded the StarSong recording band Sacred Fire and toured the U.S. with Petra and Mylon LeFevre & Broken Heart. Davis, a Berklee-trained guitarist, founded Last Generation and For You Brother, and Miranda joined the Brazilian rock group Oficina G3 at twenty-one. The sound they bring to this single sits in an 80s and 90s rock pop mold.

The first thing that caught my attention was how crisp the production is. This is superb and incredibly satisfying to listen to. There is an undeniable gospel influence here, not just because of the contagious positive vibes of the narrative and the lyrics themselves, but because of the execution itself and the choir backup vocals. Speaking of the narrative, the song carries a beautiful message that love is out there for all of us in all forms, and the form that never fades is God’s grace. Faith is the purest form of love, and one should open themselves to it because no human can love you more than God.

The band is currently working on bookings and festival appearances, and it describes “When Love Walks In” as the start of a new chapter for the trio. No dates have been announced yet, so for now the single is the best way to hear what three experienced players sound like when they have the time and space to get it right.
