Ohio-based artist Jared Fullerman opens a new creative chapter with his latest single “Super Senior (Smooth Stones),” the first glimpse into his upcoming album Ins, scheduled for release on May 1st. Following the critical praise surrounding his 2023 debut Albatross, the track introduces a slightly broader sonic palette while preserving the thoughtful songwriting that has already earned Fullerman a growing audience in the indie music sphere.
The inspiration behind the song comes from a surprisingly relatable moment. After completing college one semester later than expected due to an internship, Fullerman logged into his university portal only to see the label “Super Senior” attached to his academic profile. What might seem like a simple administrative detail carried an unexpected emotional weight, eventually becoming the central idea behind the track. In a fitting move, the screenshot from that dashboard later became the single’s cover art, grounding the song in a very real personal moment.

The piece reflects on procrastination and the tendency to delay important life steps. The subtitle “Smooth Stones” captures the realization of constantly pushing things forward instead of confronting them head-on, like slowly smoothing stones by kicking them further down the road. The song also connects to a thematic thread introduced in “Sophomore Slump” from Albatross, once again using academic terminology as a lens for personal reflection.
The track began as a modest idea written during breaks in a campus piano practice room. What started as a slower, chord-led sketch gradually transformed into something brighter and more energetic. Influenced by jangly indie textures and melodic pop sensibilities, the arrangement gathers momentum as it progresses, eventually opening into a more vibrant and propulsive outro.
An accidental moment during recording even shaped the song’s final sound. Fullerman typically dampens his snare drum with a pillowcase, but during the final take it slipped off mid-performance, subtly changing the tone toward the end. Rather than rerecording it, he kept the take, embracing the unexpected shift.
With its polished melodies, shimmering guitars, and reflective spirit, Jared Fullerman’s “Super Senior (Smooth Stones)” transforms a moment of personal discomfort into a vibrant indie rock release, offering a promising first step toward the expansive world of his upcoming album Ins.
