The guitar solo at the center of the track was originally recorded for a different C’batch composition, “Round & Round,” before he revisited it and realized it could carry an entirely separate piece of music. Pulled out of that original setting and placed inside a new cinematic, electronic production, the solo becomes the whole emotional throughline of the song, with no lyrics steering the listener toward any one interpretation.
C’batch is a player who clearly understands the importance of space and silence when it comes to playing melodies and solos, and this is an excellent, expressive performance in that mold, the kind of playing that calls to mind Andy Timmons and those timeless 80s rock ballads built around a guitar that knows when not to fill every gap. What keeps it from feeling like a throwback, though, is the production. The electronic textures surrounding the guitar firmly place the track in the modern era, giving an otherwise classic style of playing a genuinely fresh sheen rather than dressing it up as nostalgia.
That combination fits the track’s title well. “The Last Light” is meant to sit in the space between darkness and hope, open enough that it could read as a farewell, a memory, or a quiet moment of reflection depending on who’s listening, and the music backs that ambiguity up rather than undercutting it with words. As part of C’batch’s broader Vault approach, revisiting and reworking pieces from across his catalogue, this single makes a solid case that an old idea handled with care can sound like something entirely new.
