Lyons Lane‘s rise has an oddly analog origin story for a band that broke through on social media. Founders Mark Leo and Thomas “Tomcat” Thompson met in high school over a shared love of rockabilly and doo-wop, then spent their early years grinding through four-hour sets of 1950s covers in dive bars before the lineup grew to include Darrian Loehne on guitar, Matty Stevens on tenor sax, and Shane Wheeler on drums. A viral cover of “Love Potion No. 9” turned that into real momentum, nearly two million Spotify streams and a sold-out hometown show at Ferndale’s Magic Bag Theatre, and now the band arrives at its debut EP, “You’ll Talk About It!,” out September 25th, recorded over two years at Rustbelt Studios in Royal Oak with producer Jake Halkey.
First impression is this is funkier than expected, and that only gets reinforced as the EP goes on. This is an outfit that clearly understands groove and how far a simple, catchy idea can carry a song, the main bassline on “Tahitian Pearls” being a good example of that instinct at work. It’s genuinely the kind of EP built to get people moving rather than just nodding along. The song that best proves this project leans more pop than pure funk is “Emma’s Addiction,” a straight-up doo-wop cut in a major key with a wall-of-sound production and arrangement that gives it a feel closer to timeless than trend-chasing.
That range fits a band whose whole pitch is vintage without nostalgia, and it shows across an EP built around love, loss, obsession, and ego, handled with more wit than heaviness. That comes through right from opener “Don’t Shoot The Messenger,” a wry, storytelling-driven track about a man confessing infidelity to another man, only for it to turn out the messenger himself is the one responsible, exactly the kind of humor-first narrative that’s become the band’s signature, and one that sets the tone for how the rest of the EP balances a serious groove with a sense of humor about itself.
Between the horn-driven arrangements, the doo-wop foundation, and a rhythm section that clearly knows how to lock into a groove, “You’ll Talk About It!” makes a strong case for why Lyons Lane‘s live show has already sold out a room that once hosted the White Stripes. This is a band with a genuinely distinct identity, and a debut EP confident enough to lead with humor while still delivering the songwriting to back it up.
