In an industry built around visibility, Vasa Kumora have chosen almost the opposite approach. The southern Italian project keeps the identities of its two main members secret, has no plans to perform live, and seems largely uninterested in the usual pursuit of fame and commercial pressure. Instead, the music gets to exist on its own terms. Their latest release, “Six Feet Inside You,” is another piece of that deliberately elusive world.
Formed in Crotone in 2022, Vasa Kumora describe themselves as an “alternative goth” band, using the genre as a starting point rather than a formula. At a time when dark and gothic aesthetics can easily become familiar territory, their approach is centred on finding a more personal interpretation, one that moves away from established clichés while retaining the atmosphere and darkness associated with the genre.
But the intrigue goes beyond anonymity. “Six Feet Inside You” belongs to a much larger narrative: Vasa Kumora are gradually releasing singles that will eventually form a trilogy of albums following the life of a fictional character named Toby. Each release becomes another fragment of a story that is still taking shape.
There is something compelling about that decision to let the fictional world take precedence over the people behind it. Without faces, live appearances, or a conventional artist persona to anchor the project, the listener is left to encounter Vasa Kumora through the music itself.
Vasa Kumora may have chosen to stay invisible, but “Six Feet Inside You” makes it difficult to ignore what they are building. With Toby’s story still unfolding, there is clearly more to discover; and that is exactly where the mystery becomes most interesting!
