Everyone has had that moment of catching their reflection and feeling like they’re looking at someone else. That’s the starting point for “Cracks in the Mirror,” the new single from Plain Drifter, the recording project of Sunshine Coast singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sam Lillicrap. It came out on October 2nd, and it’s about confidence breaking down and self-doubt taking over, the sense that the person looking back no longer matches the person you used to be.
Musically, this song has a classic rock motif, and it’s paced very well. It feels timeless, and that’s precisely because it’s authentic and doesn’t just copy the clichés of rock music. According to the press materials, the sound is built on gritty guitars, strong melodies and an upfront, emotionally charged vocal, with the guitars given plenty of space and weight. The track was built layer by layer, and Lillicrap deliberately kept some rough edges rather than polishing everything flat.

The influences are named plainly. Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen and Ryan Adams are the touchstones for the storytelling, with a heavier classic-rock edge added on top. Everything was written, recorded, and produced independently in a home studio on the Sunshine Coast, which is where the hands-on approach comes from.
“Cracks in the Mirror” comes from the forthcoming album All Roads Lead to This, which follows a loose journey through loss, memory, addiction, family, self-doubt and acceptance. This single is described as the point where the album turns inward, toward self-examination. Plain Drifter is also preparing to take the songs on stage in 2027 in a raw, stripped-back format, with details still to come. If this single is a fair preview, the full album looks like one worth keeping an eye on.
