A cocoon sounds like shelter, a place to hide until everything outside has changed. RADARFIELD‘s “Cocoon” asks what happens when that shelter stops protecting you and starts keeping you in. The Berlin darkwave project released the single on August 2nd, and it sits in the tense space between withdrawal and transformation, where isolation can feel safer than freedom even as staying still becomes impossible.

Musically, “Cocoon” is very much what you would expect from the project. It opens in darkness and tension, then draws you into an electronic world of dark synth textures, haunting melodic elements, and a driving rhythmic pulse. The sound is cinematic, and the mood closes in around you. Then it takes a few twists and turns in its third act that really bring it over the edge for me. It shifts into more of an industrial metal sound for a little bit, which was very interesting to listen to.

RADARFIELD began in Berlin in late 2010 as a post-punk and alternative rock band, then moved toward electronics after the drummer was replaced by a drum machine and the lineup shrank. Over the years, the sound has settled into darkwave, synthwave and electronica with a few drum and bass touches. The band lists Depeche Mode, The Cure, New Order, Gary Numan, Joy Division and David Bowie among its influences. “Cocoon” follows “Light Fantastic,” which came out in October 2025, and “Séance” and “Death & Beauty” before it. It also has an official video.

After more than fifteen years, RADARFIELD is still working with the same core idea of the space between what can be seen and what stays hidden. “Cocoon” adds a third-act surprise to that formula, and it makes the single worth hearing through to the end.
