Cinematic and with an intense groove, Andy McLaughlan’s latest single ‘If I Be Damned’ is a piece of music that effortlessly establishes an atmosphere that pulls you in and does not easily let go.
An independent artist hailing from Glasgow, Scotland, Andy McLaughlan starts his latest single with a bold and in-your-face arrangement that aims to establish a foothold in the listener’s attention. The battering groove, industrial ambience, and immense electronic environment, all create an almost alien soundscape that got me exceptionally hooked, and immersed.
‘If I Be Damned’ makes use of a minor second interval in its main motif, an interval known for its threatening and dramatic nature. McLaughlan proceeds to blend the menacing riffs with his seemingly freeform vocal part, creating a fusion that is essential and rocking. A dazzling display of energy and strength. McLaughlan’s vocals are flamboyant and are gorgeously executed, showcasing a capable, confident vocalist who is in total control of the feeling he’s creating with his voice.
‘If I Be Damned’ was recorded in McLaughlan’s seaside studio, following a move away from his turbulent time in the Glaswegian city centre, then was mixed by Arthur Pingrey and mastered by John Webber at AIR Studios whose credits include Bowie and George Michael. The quality of the sound is immense, and while it is a musical direction that won’t appeal to everybody, ‘If I Be Damned’ is an honest and direct song with loud emotions that totally excels at being what it is. A piece of cinematic hard rock that is meant to be played loud.
