Halloween classics are hard to resist, especially when they come with a healthy dose of silliness. With “Monster Mash,” Sheldon Mashugana puts his own comedic spin on Bobby Pickett’s beloved 1962 hit, embracing its familiar charm while giving it a personality all his own.
The cover single stays true to the playful spirit of the original, with one particularly fitting addition: “Mashugana” woven into the chorus. It’s a simple but effective touch that connects the song to Sheldon’s wonderfully absurd persona. Rather than reinventing a Halloween staple, he leans into its familiarity, letting humour and vocal delivery take centre stage.
Recorded at Justin Pierce Music studio in Dallas, Texas, with Justin Pierce handling the recording and mixing, the track uses a karaoke backing track instead of live instrumentation. This keeps the focus on Sheldon’s performance and comedic timing. Morgan admits that getting the pacing right initially proved challenging, but once he found his vocal approach, the song became surprisingly easy to perform.
And that simplicity suits the project. Comedy music doesn’t always need elaborate arrangements or technical flourishes; sometimes, knowing how to have fun with a familiar tune is enough. As the comedic alter ego of Dallas-based performer Dean Morgan, Sheldon Mashugana has built his identity around exactly that spirit, with 18 slapstick comedy films on YouTube and upcoming television appearances in Santa Fe.
Beyond the Halloween fun, “Monster Mash” reflects the lighthearted spirit behind Sheldon Mashugana as a character. By giving a beloved classic his own comedic touch, he stays true to his mission of offering audiences a little escape from everyday pressures!
