Typically, I keep my hot takes under wraps until the end, but OMG, Omens just dropped a debut album that’s nothing short of legendary! Buckle up, because here’s the scoop!
“Omens” is a 12-track album from the Canadian band of the same name. The group features Trev Tuminski (vocals and guitar), Mike Keller (guitars), Don Jacks (drums), and Mike Onufreychuk (bass). As you listen to these four musicians, you will be truly impressed by their remarkable harmony. This isn’t their first release; it feels like you’re experiencing the sound of an iconic band that has been musically active for two or three decades.
Usually, I refrain from analyzing each track individually in my album reviews to avoid influencing the listener’s experience. However, the opening track features a captivating melodic guitar line that transitions into a strong rhythm and beats, complemented by powerful raw vocals. These elements are sure to capture the attention of any listener. And the best part? You’ll find the same quality in every track! Quite impressive, wouldn’t you agree?
While compiling the list, I was truly impressed by the experience. Upon exploring their press kit further, I discovered the reason for such harmony: Keller and Tuminski previously played together in Jet Set Satellite. This band was a staple on Canadian rock radio and MuchMusic in the early 2000s, thanks to hit singles like “Best Way to Die,” “Ladykiller,” and “Baby, Cool Your Jets.”
Although the music is highly influenced by heavy metal icons, still I can sense the modern spirit within their mix and even they know the essence of being in a heavy metal band, as Omens lead singer Trev Tuminski shared “Personally, I hate it when bands take their foot off the gas, try to be heavy for the sake of being heavy, or completely overlook the hook,” from this perspective he added “With OMENS, we knew we weren’t gonna be reinventing any wheels, but we’d at least cover ‘em in mud and play ’til they fell off. We got together to lock into a signature sound and do our best to craft deep, dark, cool songs that get stuck in your head all day.” – Tuminski says.
I believe we are currently witnessing a worldwide decline in the popularity of metal music. However, I am confident that this genre will make a comeback, especially with emerging legendary bands like Omens. So, get your neck ready for some serious headbanging! Enjoy!
