A delicious amalgamation of funk, pop, and rock, lovingly retro and exquisitely colored, Jason Masi’s ‘Pretty’ is a song you truly don’t wish for it to end.
A singer and songwriter based in Alexandria, Virginia, Jason Masi’s musical talents on ‘Pretty’ are just delightful. A rather rounded songwriter, his build on ‘Pretty’ is engaging, the melodies are touching, and the flow of the instrumentation is just gripping. ‘Pretty’ is an immediate showstopper.
From that drum fill introducing us to the song, with its subdued and fat snare roll paving the way for the uber-tight funk guitar delivery and charismatic Leslie organ, it becomes clear very early on that ‘Pretty’ is a rather well-thought-out song. Well-executed too, the vocals on ‘Pretty’ are perfectly melodious and heartfelt, also gripping in their synergy with the remainder of the song’s thunderous arrangement. The funk guitars are just tasteful, and the rotary organs charismatically fill in the gaps. The dramatic composition is lush and is perfectly explored by the characterful instrumental palette, especially so by the short showstopper of a guitar solo.
‘Pretty’ is a rather complete song. A perfectly tight and self-contained song with engaging songwriting and performances made absolutely exquisite by a lush and sophisticated mixing job that makes ‘Pretty’ one civilized piece of songwriting that’s easily going to survive the year and make it to be one of 2025’s best funk/disco/rock hybrids, if not its sole contender.
