It has been some time since I encountered an outstanding black or death metal track from Italy. Last month, SoulDaemon released “Remembrance of My Soul,” which I can confidently label as a masterpiece. Allow me to explain why below.

Hailing from the lovely city of Padova, Mark SoulDaemon, the band’s founder, is eager to showcase his remarkable talent for music creation. As you listen to “Remembrance of My Soul,” prepare to be captivated by the exceptional orchestral introduction paired with a stunning bass-driven composition. Personally, I find that music rooted in a strong bassline is always impressive. Think about it—can you recall a song built around a bassline that you didn’t enjoy? I doubt it! The structure of this 5:11-minute track is truly remarkable, transporting me to an experimental death metal experience.

According to the press kit, “In this recording, Mark is assisted by Oph Serpent on drums and Raffaele, the keyboardist from the melodic death metal band Alzhagoth.”

Their contributions enhance not only the sound quality and overall harmony of the music but also evoke a nostalgic feel of the 90s as I listened to the iconic tracks from legendary bands like Death and Bathory. For instance, do you recall Voice of the Soul by Death? The first time I heard it, I was struck by how an extreme metal band could produce such a remarkable acoustic experimental piece. I experience a similar sensation here, especially around the 4:00 mark of the track, where you can truly appreciate its complexity and embark on an unforgettable musical journey.

Even though the song is composed solely of bass, keyboard, and drums, these three instruments manage to create an atmospheric masterpiece. I was delighted to read Mark’s statement, which resonated with my feelings about the track: “The song has been created to be atmospherically intimate connection painting shades of grey fog and sometimes among sweet memories, melancholy of a restless soul”

To me, SoulDaemon is one of the extreme metal projects I’ve been longing for over the years. If the artist maintains this level of exceptional skill, I truly believe we are witnessing the rise of an icon within this genre. Cheers to that!
