Eclectic and alternative rock outfit Pork Pie never fails to amaze with their lush instrumental palettes, exciting arrangements, quirky and confident compositions, and the creative, inventive attitude behind their music.
‘The Raven’ is the fifth and final single from Pork Pie’s second studio album, expanding on the already extensive instrumental, textural, and melodic vocabulary the Irish band is working with. Based in Dundalk, Pork Pie is made up of Peter and Michael Laverty on guitars and bass, respectively, alongside Shane Brett’s drums and Michael Stafford’s vocals and rhythm guitar.
‘The Raven’ is Pork Pie’s boldest single to date, unfolding more like an anthemic, psychedelic ballad than the caveman blues and garage sound that their previous singles made their way with. The dynamic and quick pace of the groove makes for an enriching rhythmic trip that’s manic and flighty, mirrored in Stafford’s yelled vocals, colorful, Mixolydian riffs, and swirling organ swells. The vocals are as melodically gripping as always and the delivery is balanced enough to make the song gripping, but also unhinged enough as to lend quite a unique personality to the music, a personality that has come to define Pork Pie as an outfit.
‘The Raven’ is expansive, adventurous, bold, and manic. An enthralling, lofi listen that leaves a lasting impact that’s as potent as all of Pork Pie’s previous singles, and also as unique as each individual one of them has been.
