V.N. GAIA, PORTUGAL — Portuguese songwriter Bash Co. announces the release of his new single, “Velvet,” out March 22, 2026 — his most naturally flowing composition to date, and the one that arrived most unexpectedly. A deeply personal love song about enduring affection through difficult times, it was written during a six-day trip to Prague and recorded back home in his own studio, carrying the emotional imprint of a city that touched something in him he had not felt before.
“I was in Prague six days and brought the song with me. I felt I had to finish it while I had this flowing feeling because I was there — back home wouldn’t be the same.”
That urgency is audible throughout. “Velvet” has the quality of something that arrived whole rather than being assembled — a rare departure from Bash Co.‘s usual weeks-long writing and composition process. Prague, it seems, did not give him the option of waiting.

“Velvet” weaves together an extraordinary set of references into what is, at its heart, a love song: Kafka, Prague’s monuments, the 1989 Velvet Revolution, and the Iron Curtain all find their way into the lyrical tapestry. The influence of INXS — who recorded their iconic “Never Tear Us Apart” in the Czech capital — runs through the track’s emotional DNA, connecting Bash Co.’s visit to the city with a long lineage of music that Prague has quietly shaped.
The production carries that historical consciousness into the arrangement itself. In the song’s second half, the drums shift — deliberately, meticulously — into the rhythm of marching troops, a sonic nod to the events that gave the track its title and its emotional context.
“People won’t know why, but for me it was obvious I had to have that at some point — because of the Velvet Revolution, the Iron Curtain, troops marching.”
The song was released on Bash Co.’s birthday — a detail that deepens its personal significance considerably. This is not a release with a calculated campaign date. It is a song given to the world on the day that felt most right.

Bash Co. is a teacher and songwriter from V.N. Gaia, Portugal — and, by his own insistence, notably “not a singer.” He has been creating solo work since 1999, driven not by commercial ambition but by something more fundamental: the refusal to leave his compositions unheard.
Alongside his day job, he has spent over thirteen years performing Portuguese music with a band — a parallel musical life kept deliberately separate from his solo work, which exists in its own distinct artistic space. Music, for Bash Co., is a creative outlet and a calling rather than a career — and that distinction shapes everything about how he makes it and shares it.
The Kafka quote that runs through his philosophy captures it precisely: “We’re all cages in search of a bird.” Purpose, in Bash Co.‘s understanding, is fulfilled only when creation reaches the world. An unheard song is an empty cage.
“I could never love myself without letting the world know what I’ve written and composed since 1999. My main goal is not to leave my songs in the closet and regret it.”
He records in a home studio built with genuine effort and genuine care. He places the work ahead of the recognition — to the point that his real name is deliberately kept from public view. It is about hearing what has been made. Not who made it.
