NYC funk-rock band Circus Mind returns with a groove-heavy grenade in their latest single, “Battle of Brooklyn,” a track that fuses the funk and fire of their signature sound with a message as bold as the borough it salutes. Released on May 23, 2025, this alt-rock-soul-funk fusion draws an unflinching parallel between the historic 1776 Revolutionary War battle and the modern siege of gentrification reshaping New York’s neighborhoods.

Inspired by an NPR podcast and his own move to Greenpoint, frontman Mark Rechler found himself haunted by the layers of history beneath his feet. The lyrics poured out: raw, vivid, and immediate. What emerged is a track as theatrical as it is thought-provoking, grounded in the past yet marching resolutely into the present.

From its opening lines, “Got a bone box and some cash / Got a heater in my stash,” the song paints a visceral image of colonial warfare before flipping the script. Suddenly, muskets are replaced with bulldozers, and prison ships give way to hipster cafés, displacing families and culture alike. “We got a John Doe / And he’s forced to sell his place / To build a condo on the land from his Nanna Grace,” Rechler sings, nailing the emotional and economic cost of urban redevelopment.

Musically, “Battle of Brooklyn” is peak Circus Mind: groovy, gritty, and gloriously layered, with funked-out rhythms, crunchy rock guitars, and bursts of soul that underscore the track’s intensity. This isn’t just music, it’s a protest march in 4/4 time.

The genius of the single lies in its double helix of historical metaphor and modern urgency. Just as the original battle was fought to define a nation, the new battle challenges who gets to belong, who gets priced out, and who gets written into the future of the city. The band turns the battlefield into a dancefloor, and the anthem into an act of resistance.

With “Battle of Brooklyn,” Circus Mind doesn’t just deliver a song, they drop a sonic statement, proving that even in peacetime, some battles still rage, and that groove can be a weapon as powerful as any.
