Fresh off a massive milestone, The Perfect Storm is celebrating their single “We Fell in Love” hitting #1 on the National Radio Hits AC40 Chart and breaking into the Top 50 on Mediabase Activator. The track’s irresistible blend of modern pop shimmer and retro charm has resonated far beyond their Albany roots, connecting with listeners who have turned the song into a nationwide favorite. In this interview, band members James, Matty, and Ethan reflect on their chart-topping moment, the love story behind the song, the energy of their live shows, and what’s coming next as they prepare for an even bigger 2026.
- Your single just hit #1… how does it feel to have your music connecting on such a wide scale?
James: It is an amazing feeling to have so many people love and connect with our music. To make an impact on the charts and touch other people’s lives in a positive way is very gratifying and humbling.
- Every great song has a story. What inspired ‘We Fell in Love,’ and did you know it had this potential?
James: “We Fell In Love” is inspired by that beautiful girl you encounter in life—the one who’s super sexy and cool, but you feel like she’d never give you the time of day. Then suddenly, you have that chance encounter and boom—fireworks. The message is simple: love can happen when least expected.
As for how well it has resonated, it truly is a pleasant surprise. You always hope your song becomes part of the soundtrack of someone’s life. Seeing it do that gives us a real sense of pride.
- What emotion or message do you hope listeners carry with them?
James: I hope the song makes people feel good and uplifted. That they feel a sense of hope and happiness—and even the courage to go after the one they want.
- Your band name reflects a fusion of elements. How is that spirit reflected in this song?
James: The Perfect Storm name comes from blending our different musical backgrounds and influences. “We Fell In Love” does that by pulling elements from multiple eras. It’s a modern pop song with the catchiness of a 60s feel-good hit. Matty’s drumbeat and roto-tom fills add a unique texture. Ethan’s trippy guitar solo brings a 90s vibe. I play 12-string guitar to fill out the sound. Ethan and I harmonize and even break into Motown/Doo-Wop style sha-na-nas at the end.
Matty: As a whole, our sound is about trying things we love. Our album Maiden Voyage is packed with different styles—done in a fresh, modern way that makes our music unique.
- Albany has a vibrant music scene. How has your community reacted to the song’s success?
James: We’ve had a lot of support throughout the Capital District. Huge shout out to Rob Smittix from RadioRadioX for the amazing coverage! And a big thank-you to all the local fans, friends, and family who come to the shows and support The Perfect Storm.
- What’s the live energy like when you perform ‘We Fell in Love’?
Ethan: The energy is awesome! Fans go wild. Anyone who follows us knows they’re getting a fun, high-energy show.
I remember a festival this past summer— the crowd knew the words to every song we sang. That was special.
- How has hitting #1 changed your perspective on the future?
Ethan: It’s made us realize we have good music and can hang with the biggest artists. It affirms our belief that we’re only going to keep getting bigger.
- What’s next for The Perfect Storm?
Ethan: We’re currently recording our second album, set for release in 2026. We’re also playing shows and trying to open for larger acts. We’d love to play notable festivals this coming summer—especially Rocking the Dock Music Festival in Lake George. That one would be special because it’s close to home and at beautiful Lake George.
