There’s a certain vintage flair to Harry Kappen’s sound, and his song ‘Break These Chains’ does a fantastic job in putting his distinctive sound and style in the limelight. A thunderous piece of rock music that’s equally manic and sophisticated.

Harry Kappen is a multi-talented multi-instrumentalist, musician, and music therapist that hails from the city of Baarn in the Netherlands. The master’s degree holder in music therapy certainly had stories from the workplace inspire songs of his, but it is the constant stream of misinformation and continuous degradation of human value that we are all witnessing firsthand on the new everyday that inspired ‘Break These Chains’. A dramatic and punchy ballad with luscious overdriven riffs, characterful vocals, and a mammoth of a beat.

Inspired by artists such as David Bowie and Radiohead, among others, ‘Break These Chains’ is a perfect capture of Kappen’s sound, mirroring those 2 influences in particular. The intricate and whimsical chord sequences have Radiohead written all over them alongside the cavernous drum sound that masterfully blends Hail to the Thief-era sounds with a hard-hitting hard rock flair. A distinctive David Bowie inspiration can be easily spotted in Kappen’s vocal delivery; a flair of drama, drawn out vibrato, and a certain flamboyance.

‘Break These Chains’ has massive riffs and an elegant, unusual structure that makes the flow of the song rather progressive. An exciting listen with a profound message and an impeccable execution.
