Liverpool four-piece RISE return with “Hard To Leave You” released August 2nd as the Barbarian mix, a full remix of the version that first appeared on their 2024 EP Memories and Possibilities. The band felt the original never quite captured the energy and aggression they wanted, closer to how the song lands live, so they went back into Whitewood Studios in Liverpool with longtime producer Rob Whiteley and songwriter Paul Kinley to rebuild it. The song sits with the ambiguity of a relationship on the edge, not quite resolved either way, which gives the track its tension without spelling anything out.
That emotional uncertainty comes through most in the arrangement itself. The song’s strongest asset is how melodic it is, with a warm, layered production style that wraps around the listener rather than pushing at them, an immersive wall of sound that lets the emotional weight of the lyric sit rather than forcing it. Bassist and vocalist Sam Kinley, who performs under the name stayMellow, carries that emotional delivery with a wide range, while guitarist Brian Petch’s playing is detailed and given real space in the mix rather than buried under the rest of the band. Paul Kinley, also on keyboards and backing vocals, said the goal with Rob Whiteley has always been consistency: a recognisable RISE sound built up over years of gigging together, rather than chasing it for a single.
The video mixes animation with behind-the-scenes footage shot during the recording sessions at Whitewood, with the animated sequences handled by Matt at Lodge Productions. It’s a fitting pairing for a song built more on mood and melody than aggression for its own sake, and the Barbarian mix gives an already strong song from the band’s catalogue a second life with the energy it was always meant to have.
