Goddamn Wolves might claim they hate this song, but it’s the kind of hate that turns into obsession. Their latest single, “I Hate This Song,” is a sarcastic love letter to the genre they’ve mastered, a boisterous, tightly woven indie rock track that defies its own title by being nearly impossible to dislike.
The Raleigh-based trio has never sounded more locked in. After seven years of making music together, Chris, Laura, and Drew channel their collective synergy into a track that feels both meticulously crafted and wildly unfiltered. Gritty guitars and energetic percussion lay the groundwork for dual vocals that swerve between snarl and sweetness. There’s an undeniable chemistry in the call-and-response between male and female voices; Laura’s chorus hits like a smirk you can’t shake, while Chris’s verses hold down the sneering momentum.
There’s a playful defiance running through the song. It name-drops their city and band with a wink, rides on riffs that throwback to ‘90s alt-rock while sliding neatly into today’s indie playlists, and balances rawness with studio polish. It’s not just catchy, it’s cunning. Every element, from the sardonic lyrics to the collaborative construction behind them, dares the listener to roll their eyes and sing along anyway.
“I Hate This Song” was recorded, mixed, and mastered at Found After Dark Audio, the band’s Raleigh recording home, and the production does them justice. Crisp where it counts, fuzzy when it needs to be, the track captures the band’s essence: loud, brash, and unapologetically themselves.
Irony never sounded so good!
