With their latest release, “Aunty Meredith,” Melbourne alt-rock outfit One More Weekend dive headfirst into the emotional aftermath of a psychedelic breakdown at a music festival. It’s a song about the moment when a euphoric escape spirals out of control, when the search for freedom slips into psychological freefall.
Built around gritty guitar lines and brooding rhythms, “Aunty Meredith” tells the story of a festival-goer caught between the high of the moment and the darkness that follows. What starts as a typical trip turns nightmarish as the protagonist is forced to confront suppressed fears, anxieties, and ultimately, their own fragmented identity. It’s not about the festival itself, but what it unearths, a confrontation with the self that’s both terrifying and transformative.
The chorus pleads for clarity and release, “So please, give me back my mind,” underscoring the song’s core theme: losing yourself in order to find something real, even if it hurts. Lead singer Connor Dougan’s vocals walk the edge of collapse, grounding the track with raw, unfiltered emotion.
Premiering live at Melbourne’s Catfish Bar on July 12, this track marks a new chapter for One More Weekend: darker, more introspective, and unafraid to face the fallout of escapism. With “Aunty Meredith,” the band delivers a haunting exploration of what happens when the music fades and you’re left face-to-face with the version of yourself you tried to outrun.
