Southern California post-rock outfit In Transmission have released their long-awaited new EP Betterment, a sweeping and emotionally charged collection that marks a bold evolution in the band’s sound. Produced by Beau Burchell (Saosin, Chevelle, ERRA), Betterment pushes the group further into alt-rock territory while staying rooted in the atmospheric textures that have defined their journey since forming in 2011.
Originally created as an outlet for guitarist/vocalist Martin Diaz (formerly of hardcore act Mikoto), In Transmission began as a vehicle for lush, instrumental storytelling inspired by post-rock icons like Explosions in the Sky, Sigur Rós, and Mogwai. Over the years—and with the additions of longtime collaborators Garrett Carroll (drums), Daniel Cardoza (guitar), Darrell Schwaigger (bass), and Jerome De Leon (guitar)—the band has steadily transitioned into a more vocal-driven, emotionally immersive sound that bridges post-rock, indie, and heavier rock textures.
Leading the charge is the stunning new single “Catching Up,” which arrives alongside a cinematic music video now streaming on YouTube. The track captures the introspective heart of Betterment—a meditation on healing, transformation, and the inner struggles that shape us. Diaz’s layered, expressive vocals serve not just as a lyrical vessel, but as another instrument in the dense, dynamic mix.
Drums for the record were tracked in the peaceful seclusion of Pale Moon Ranch in the San Gabriel Mountains, with the rest of the EP recorded at Burchell’s private studio in Temecula. Mastering was handled by Alan Douches (West West Side Music), whose credits span generations of alternative and heavy music.
Betterment doesn’t just sound expansive—it feels necessary. Through its nuanced blend of ambient layering, intense rhythms, and lyrical urgency, the EP challenges listeners to reflect on themselves and the world around them. Its title isn’t just aspirational; it’s a demand to grow, evolve, and “do better.”
In Transmission are planning a string of Southern California shows to support the release, with limited edition vinyl, shirts, and hats available for pre-order now.
Watch the “Catching Up” video and stream Betterment on August 29th via all major platforms.
