The R.E.S.E.A.R.C.H. is a Vancouver-based art rock and indie pop trio consisting of Richard Scarlett, Ryan Worsley, and Ali Noir. They focus on sonic exploration and collaboration. Their latest single, “Fast Forward,” released on December 10, 2025, blends garage rock with futuristic pop, inspired by Gorillaz, The Strokes, and Franz Ferdinand, while reflecting on personal tragedy and memories. Produced by Worsley, this track showcases their commitment to genre innovation. The trio discusses their collaborative approach, the emotions behind the release, and their future aspirations.
- As a production group that identifies sounds and collaborates to realize ideas, how has your shared journey in Vancouver’s music scene shaped the trio’s approach to creating records that intentionally avoid conventional categorization?
It’s been easy. Even though each of us has had our own individual success here in Vancouver we have intentionally tried to not let outside scene issues affect us. Only letting people know what’s up by the time they are working with us keeps a low expectation level and reduces the overall pressure until most of the project had been completed.
- The formation of The R.E.S.E.A.R.C.H. emphasizes building concepts through partnerships. In what ways have your individual backgrounds—spanning production, performance, and ideation—contributed to the project’s evolution from earlier works like “One Legged Pigeon” to embracing a broader sonic range?
Anybody who has been in this game for a minute understands that partnerships in music is a delicate thing. The real trick is to allow each person’s individual background and production ideas to get a fair listen and then for each person’s ego to understand that their idea may not be the best for that particular moment.
We have really lucked out in that intricate game of do what’s best for the project.
Collaborating with kids who know what they are doing does make it easy and it’s worked out so far.
- “Fast Forward” draws from the profound loss of Angela Bolognese and the inspiration derived from her appreciation of your music. How did this personal catalyst influence the single’s thematic blend of tragedy and optimism, manifested in its upbeat garage rock structure?
I find that a lot of the best music has its origins in dealing with the hardest things in life. In this case dealing with loss gave the inspiration for the song but we tried not to let it be the idea of the sound. Its not really a sad song. We wanted up tempo guitar driven energy. Even if its dealing with life in the lyrics.
- Collaborating internally with Ryan Worsley on production for “Fast Forward” highlights the trio’s self-contained creative process. What specific decisions in layering frenetic energy and catchy hooks helped capture the track’s hyper-catchy, forward-looking essence?
That’s the thing a lot of our album “One legged Pigeon” is made with people we collaborate with but for our debut “Fast Forward” we went with just us. We wanted to start with just us before we got into the shit we made with other people.
I like to think all our stuff is catchy in one way or the other.
- With “Fast Forward” receiving acclaim for its immersive atmosphere and professional polish, how does this single serve as a gateway to the variety of records you aim to produce, inviting external connections for future ideas?
Great Question. With the success of “Fast Forward” we understand that fans of the single will have expectations of what our new releases should sound like. While we do have a variety of sounds on the album for sure we will follow up with a track that is more similar than different. Once we secure an audience then we will open the door to things we have been experimenting with.
- Following the release of “Fast Forward,” what innovative directions are you pursuing for upcoming projects, such as expanding collaborations beyond Vancouver or experimenting with multimedia integrations to further your mission of sonic diversity?
Our door is open. What our intentions are is to let people know we are here. The R.E.S.E.A.R.C.H makes music. Right now we are on one step at a time but once the ball is rolling we hope to showcase our skills with anybody dope. In my heart I really want to be on a movie soundtrack mostly because walking a red carpet movie premiere is on my bucket list.
