I remember last year when we received the German indie electronica and post-punk mashup artist K4LT‘s submission “LCPD” and we were really amazed by its impressive blend and unique mix. And here we go again with another hit, This Room (Reprise). Let’s find out.
In the last two years, I believe that he is the best electronica/post-punk artist to perform in such genre and diversity. His influences with the vintage style easily can be noticed, still, the creativity here shows he use it perfectly. According to his press kit, his passion is influenced by artists like Mogwai, Low, Washed Out, and Unknown Mortal Orchestra. He discusses how specific parts of “This Room (Reprise)” were inspired by different artists. And I really loved his reflection about it “The song is a reference to “This Room” by The Notwist and includes a few other references like the “Swim and sleep like me” which references to “Swim and Sleep” from Unknown Mortal Orchestra and also the armour pads line referring to “Paper Boats” from Nada Surf.” – K4LT explained.
Since I am not an electronica fan, I cannot deny that the main melody of This Room (Reprise) can easily grab the attention of any listener. It’s really iconic. Although he likes to use old devices such as the legendary Suzuki Omnichord back in the 80s, he is keen to keep the modern touch along with the vintage spirit, and in my view, he implemented it perfectly.
K4LT‘s new track reflects on the loss of connection in relationships in the digital age. The darkwave vibe matches the theme of the doomscroll. K4LT, a Berlin-based musician, thrives in crafting diverse sounds exploring darker themes, as he explained: The song is about the experience of more and more of your friends (and probably yourself too a bit) turn into modern day hermits, giving up on parts of life like relationships or having fun in life at all. Just trying to make it without giving any efforts into what would make them truly happy. And the songwriter being afraid how that ends (reading the “list of deaths per year”). In the end the song is about not accepting this defeats and fighting to get up, be motivated (“up to interfere”).
There’s no doubt that although I am not a usual electronica/post-punk fan, K4LT is already added to my music collection. Now, it’s time to feel the charm and listen to This Room (Reprise) below.
