Sludgy and intense, Phwoar’s latest single ‘Waiting for the Sun’ is a melancholy-laced grunge anthem that’s melodic, engaging, and pretty confident.

Based in Birmingham, Phwoar are an alternative rock duo whose sound is just massive on their latest release. ‘Waiting for the Sun’ is a moderately heavy alternative rock piece with a patient tempo and a brooding set of melodies. The chords are tinged with darkness that lets way for a little light on a hopeful chorus. A song with a distinct character and fantastic execution.

Released on what is known as Blue Monday, a day thought to be the year’s most depressing day in the UK, the duo are celebrating a day concocted to sell people things with a song about resilience and patience. A song that sounds patient, the 6/8 time signature lends the song a sense of perpetual motion, similar to the passing of days. All days, regardless of they being the year’s most depressing or otherwise. Other than the time signature, the song’s mix is saturated with sweet, lush pads, a fantastic vocal delivery that’s sweet and warm, and a fantastic presence from the group’s overdriven guitars that sound heavy, rich, and satisfying.

With a brilliantly balanced arrangement and fantastic mixing, ‘Waiting for the Sun’ is given ample space to explore its few melancholic chord sequences and hopeful vocal melodies. A well-calculated single from a talented duo, Phwoar are displaying a fantastic songwriting gift on this release.
