A band born out of lockdown could have gone in a lot of directions. For G-BRO, “We Got A Song” is almost a celebration of the fact that people eventually found their way back to one another. Emerging from parking lots, backyards, and improvised performances during the pandemic, the six-piece channels that same need for connection into a relaxed, feel-good psychedelic-rock track.
There is an appealing looseness to the song from the start: a bending guitar figure, splashing cymbals, and rumbling drums ease into an unhurried groove, leaving plenty of room for the musicians to interact. Rather than sounding meticulously assembled, “We Got A Song” feels like a band gathered in one room and simply enjoying the moment.
That chemistry is especially evident in G-BRO’s two-drummer setup. Jim Weingast and Andy Ladue create an interlocking rhythmic foundation that keeps the track moving without taking away from its laid-back character. Recording the band live was a fitting choice, preserving the spontaneous exchanges that give the performance its personality.
The song itself is refreshingly straightforward. Its central idea is that music can lift you up, bring people together, and offer a little relief when life gets heavy. The chorus leans fully into that philosophy, with an infectious quality that practically demands audience participation. Influences from the Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers, Steely Dan, Dylan, and classic rock naturally surface in the band’s rootsy, psychedelic approach.
There is also a more experimental layer: G-BRO recorded “We Got A Song” at A=432Hz rather than the conventional 440Hz, exploring their interest in frequency and wellbeing. Whether or not you subscribe to the broader claims surrounding 432Hz, the experiment fits the band’s underlying belief that “Music is the best Rx.”
“We Got A Song” by G-BRO does not need to overcomplicate its purpose. It is about groove, chemistry, participation, and the simple pleasure of playing together; and sometimes, that is exactly the medicine you need!
