The London-based artist Rob Mawer, who has considerable experience as a musician, has launched his debut single, “Cairo.” This song reflects his experiences of visiting the city and the inspiration it provided for his writing.

From a musical perspective, I can’t overlook my admiration for his expressive vocals, and I appreciated how the music captured those synth-driven 80s vibes while seamlessly integrating into a rock framework. The guitar work is exceptionally smooth. As a guitarist and musician myself, I found myself drawn to the guitar elements alongside his vocal style. The guitar tone is impressive, and the lead guitar offers a delightful melody that complements the track beautifully.

Lyrically, I’m somewhat perplexed because I took offense at his statement in the press release, where he mentioned, “I started writing it after visiting Cairo and being struck by the seemingly lawless and chaotic nature of the city.” As someone from Cairo, I found this quite disrespectful. However, I appreciated how this experience motivated him to create his debut release, as he further explained, “It stirred something hedonistic in me and compelled me to write a dark, writhing rock song to exorcise this sensation.”

The title “Cairo” might evoke strong reactions from many listeners. However, I can’t overlook Rob Mawer‘s talent for crafting something truly exceptional. In summary, he stands out as one of the most distinctive artists I’ve come across in 2025 so far. Nonetheless, I do hope to explore other themes in his future work as well.
